The program “Animals of Linville Falls” will be presented by the Blue Ridge Parkway in Avery County at the Linville Falls Visitor Center – milepost 316 – at 1 p.m. Meet a ranger to learn about the animals that live in the Linville River and the forest that surrounds it.

This summer Watauga 4-H is introducing a new group for 5- to 8-year-olds. Shelley Armour, ag teacher/FFA advisor at WHS and a former 4-H’er, and Maya Losardo will lead a Cloverbud 4-H group for 5- to 8-year-olds. The Watauga County Parks & Recreation office will be closed on Friday, July 3, in celebration of Independence Day. Summer day camps at Watauga High School and Hardin Park School will be open for regular scheduled hours. The Watauga County Swim Complex will also be open on a regular schedule. The Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County on Friday, July 3, at 11 a.m. will present the “Junior Rangers Program: Leaf Munchers!” at the Julian Price Park Campground Amphitheater – milepost 297. What is as skinny as a worm, but eats like a pig? What sheds its skin like a snake, but grows wings like a bird? Join a ranger for this 45-minute program to learn more All programs are free and open to the public.

AppalCART, the local transportation authority serving Watauga County, will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, in recognition of Independence Day. AppalCART will resume operating the Red, Green, Gold, Purple and POP105 bus routes and all van routes on Monday, July 6, on summer schedules. Yoga retreat-Heavenly Mountain and Whispering Hills Resort, located in Boone, will be hosting weekend yoga retreats the first Friday of every month. Chargers and Rechargers Hiking Club on Saturday, July 4, will hike the Rich Mountain Carriage Trail (about 4.2 easy to moderate miles) on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County. Meet at Trout Lake parking area at 9:30 a.m. Excellent views of estate and countryside. Passes Trout Lake, meadows, forests with a good view of Grandfather Mountain. The program “Junior Rangers: Oh Deer!” will be offered by the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Linville Falls Picnic Area Environmental Education Shelter – milepost 316 – in Avery County at 2 p.m. The program is 30-45 minutes long. Learn the three essential components of a habitat by becoming a “deer” in this high activity program.

The program “Stream Gems” will be presented by the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater – milepost 316 in Avery County – at 7 p.m. the program is 45 minutes long. Come to an understanding of the different types of trout found along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and explore the natural beauty within the streams.

Award-winning authors will be signing books at the Author Booth at the Great Train Robbery in Banner Elk all day on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5. The 49th annual Pig Roast and Fireworks will take place on the Fourth of July at Beech Mountain. The Town of Beech Mountain, the Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department and the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce host this event. “After years of perfecting the seasonings and charcoal blends, our barbeque is arguably the best in the High Country,” a spokesperson for the event said. Enjoy music while dining outdoors (weather permitting, of course). And at dark, enjoy one of the best fireworks displays in the High Country. Children’s activity corner begins at 3:30 p.m. Serving at 5 p.m., and fireworks at dark. The program “On the Edge of Night: A Sunset Walk” will be offered on Sunday, July 5, at 8 p.m. at the Moses H. Come Memorial Park – milepost 294 – on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County. Bring your picnic blankets and meet the ranger on the front porch of the Cone Manor for a short walk to one of the most beautiful sunset viewing fields on the Blue Ridge Parkway. While watching the sun set slowly over the hills, you’ll also learn about the history of the Moses Cone Estate during this one hour-long program.

“Fur and Feathers” – Blue Ridge Parkway – Linville Falls Visitor Center – Milepost 316 – 1 p.m. – How these can be used to construct insects that catch the attention of trout.

“Vultures: the Misunderstood Raptor” – Blue Ridge Parkway – Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater – Milepost 316 – 7 p.m. Length 45 minutes. What would the world be like without the vulture? Come learn about this misunderstood raptor and the beauty and value it has in nature.

“Birding for Beginners” – Blue Ridge Parkway – Crabtree Meadows Campground Amphitheater – Milepost 340 – 7 p.m. Length 45 minutes. “What is the yellow and black bird that is sitting on that tree?” Come listen to the songs at sunset and hear a few tips on learning how to identify the birds around you.

Independence Praise Festival at Brushy Fork Baptist Church Brushy Fork Baptist Church on U S Highway 421 North in Vilas would like to announce our second annual Independence Praise Festival on Sunday July 5, 2009. Go Green is a summer day camp with an environmental science focus. The 400-acre campus surrounding Grandfather Academy in Banner Elk provides an outdoor science “laboratory” where students, ages 11-13, will conduct hands-on investigations into the health of local ecosystems. Daily activities will also include swimming and boating in Wildcat Lake, hiking, playing outdoor games, and creating art from nature. The camp is offered in five consecutive one-week sessions, beginning July 6 and ending Aug. 7, and meets from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers may register for one week or several weeks. The Harrill Senior Center is offering a program developed specifically for people with arthritis. Low-impact, joint-safe exercises led by AF-certified instructors can be taken either sitting down or standing. This program has been proven in research studies to reduce arthritis pain and improve ability to do more daily activities.
