It was definitely one of those moments
when you ask, and are asked, where were you when ... at
approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, history was
made when Appalachian State University stunned Michigan
and the sports world with its 34-32 victory over the Wolverines.
On this historic day, and at this precise moment in time,
two questions begged to be asked: Where were you?
and How did you react?
I was glued to a television set watching the
most wonderful thing in the whole world. My initial thought
was that our school keeps topping themselves. My second
thought was to call the police department and find out what
we were planning upon the teams return. The team deserved
a homecoming celebration and I wanted to be a part of it
because their win was so exciting.
I was sitting in Section 12, Row 89 in The
Big House on the edge of my seat. I was so afraid because
we had led almost the entire game. Someone started to say
regardless of what happens, and I stopped them and said
no, I dont want to hear regardless, I want to win.
It was the most exciting moment of my life. When we
won, I just thought, they did it. Then I started jumping
up and down yelling at the top of my lungs. Its a
moment Ill never forget. I admire their talent, and
appreciate what they do for our university.
I was right at midfield with my coaches and
team around me. My first thought was of satisfaction. Knowing
that all the hard work we had put into working on the little
things like blocking kicks had paid off. I know how much
we put into getting to this point, and a win like this is
a reward. Corey (Lynch) made a great play to block that
kick, but I do have to give him a hard time about getting
tackled by a kicker. (Laughs)
I was listening to the game on the radio and
had to pull over twice because it wasnt safe for me
to drive as excited as I was.As soon as we won, I jumped
out of my car and just started jumping up and down. My next
thought was to call my boyfriend who went to Clemson. I
always told him we could beat Clemson, and he said a school
ASUs size couldnt beat a big school. I told
him, yes we can!
I caught the game at The Library with a bunch
of my friends. My reaction was this is magic. Magic on the
mountain. It was an amazing, amazing triumph. I was so stunned,
I didnt speak for 30 seconds. Once I did, it was just
a bunch of screams.
I was watching the game at my assistant head
coach Steve Breitensteins home. My first thoughts
were of how blessed Jerry Moore is for his faithfulness
in his savior. Coach Moore often speaks of his God and gives
God credit. I think this is a reward. Coach Moore has had
some valleys along the way, but he sure has had a lot of
great peaks.
I was on a golf course during the first half
getting updates wherever I could. Once halftime hit and
I knew the score, I rushed back to Genos to watch
the second half. I remember thinking, good things happen
to good people. I wasnt that surprised because I think
this is the best team we have had here in the 23 years Ive
been here. When we won, it was a lot of elation and joy.
I havent felt electricity like that in my life.
