Peter Stone Brown: Songs from the Heart
Concert at Jimmy’s Java Friday

Philadelphia-based singer songwriter Peter Stone Brown will bring his unique voice and original songs to Jimmy’s Java in Boone this Friday.

By Jeff Eason

Somewhere back in the 90s, singer-songwriters deserted rock and roll. Everybody pawned their telecasters and picked up Martins in an attempt to cash in on the acoustic music explosion and become the next John Prine.

Almost everybody, that is.

Singer-songwriter Peter Stone Brown knows that there’s a time for acoustic ballads and there’s also a time for rocking out with a drummer and electric instruments. Stone’s music is totally original but also a throwback to the early 80s when serious songwriters fronted rock and roll bands such as Dire Straits, Gram Parker and the Rumor, Warren Zevon and Elvis Costello and the Attractions. Stone’s muse actually goes back further than that—all the way to the time when Dylan plugged in and began playing with The Band.

Peter Stone Brown will make his High Country debut at a show at Jimmy’s Java on Friday, May 23rd at 8 p.m.

For the past 30 years Brown has played in a series of Philadelphia Bands including The Others. His roots-rock style and scratchy soulful vocals are unmistakably his own and are the perfect vehicles to transport his colorful original songs.

Brown’s first gig was opening for blues legend Mississippi Fred McDowell. Although he ahs always been involved with music, Brown’s career is dotted with various stretches where he has worked as a strand-mapper, record store manager, disc-jockey, newspaper production manager, free lance writer and music journalist.

After several years on the road, Brown returned to the recording studio in 1996 and emerged with the powerful disc, Up Against It, released on the Tangible Music label. The album was recorded at Bismeaux Studio in Austin, Texas and features several notable Austin-based musicians including members of Asleep at the Wheel. Since its release, Up Against It has received universal praise with Larry Jaffee of On The Tracks Magazine writing, “If Dylan came out with Brown’s batch of songs as his own we’d all be hailing that Dylan’s back.”

Tickets for Peter Stone Brown’s solo show at Jimmy’s Java are just $2 per person. For more information, call (828) 265-3477.
