By Mike Shands

High Country wing fans delighted their taste buds while raising funds for a worthy cause last month.

Geno’s Sports Restaurant and Lounge and the High Country Inn hosted Geno’s First Wing Fling Sept. 27. The event featured 12 teams of four people each competing for cash and prizes totaling $1,500.

The Wing Fling also raised $1,200, which Geno’s donated to the Watauga Humane Society Oct. 7.

Capturing the Wing Fling’s grand prize of $500 was the M&M Wings team, captained by Beverly Giles. The team won with its feta wing recipe.

Team Jamakin Me Crazy took home second-place honors and swept the People’s Choice Award to earn $200 and a three-day getaway in Gatlingburg, Tenn.

Team Margarittaville, led by captain Mike Hill, brought home third place and $100 for its coconut curry concoction.

Other teams competing included Uncle Freddys Mouth Pleasers, Sweet Southern Twang, Code Red, Buc’s Wings, .37 Cents, Victorias Secret and Drink Heavy and Win.

Those serving as distinguished judges included CEC Troy Byrum, chef Carl Bosier, Chad Watson of House of Raeford Farms and Jeff Porter of PFG Foods.

Blake Sorensen and Ron Sarra served as the festival’s directors.
