High Country animal lovers have the perfect Christmas gift thanks to the Watauga County Humane Society, Minor’s Printing and Todd Bush Photography.

Those three organizations combined to produce the 2004 Watauga Humane Society Calendar, which is now available at several area businesses. All proceeds from the calendar sales will go directly to the humane society’s future location.

“This is our first really big fundraiser for the new shelter,” said Dee Dundon, the humane society’s president. “This money will go into the building fund so this is a first.

“We have a potential of raising $10,000 on this calendar fundraiser if we sell them all.”

Dundon said Phil Minor came up with the idea of producing the benefit calendar.

“Todd and I talked about it a little bit, then I called Dee one Sunday night and presented this to her,” Minor said. “The humane society I feel like is one of the best non-profit organizations in the area, and we like animals.”

In fact Minor has even adopted one of the humane society’s dogs.

Bush and Minor donated their talent, time, efforts and materials to produce the calendar, which features photographs of pets that were abandoned, rescued or adopted from the Watauga Humane Society or other shelters.

The humane society held a drawing Aug. 24 to determine whose pets the calendar would feature.

“There is no charge whatsoever to the humane society,” Dundon said. “This is a total donation by (Phil Minor) and Todd Bush. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the humane society.”

Lorie Bush of Todd Bush Photography said she and Todd were honored to be able to help the humane society.

“When Todd shared with me Phil’s idea for the fundraiser I knew I wanted to be part of it,” she said. “It was a great opportunity to give back to the community and to support the great work that the Watauga Humane Society does. We just love animals.”

Minor’s Printing Company employees Baron Cooper and Vikki Cooper donated their time to assist with the calendar’s design and color work.

“I’ve seen a lot of calendars, but this is as good and as professional as anything that’s on the market,” Dundon said.

The calendars cost $10 and are available at Almost Rodeo Drive, Alternatives Natural Hair Studio Banner Elk, Animal Medical Center of Boone, Animal Hospital of Boone, Appalachian New River Veterinary Associates, Bare Essentials Food Market in Boone, Blue Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Foscoe, Book Warehouse in Boone, most Boone Drug locations, Carolina Business Machines, Chestnutt Veterinary Hospital, Dancing Moon Earthway Bookstore, Daniel Boone Inn, Farmer’s Hardware, Fat Cats Music & Video, G. Todd Moore D.D.S., Green Valley Elementary School, Impeccable Pooch Dog Grooming, Loft on Main Street, Mast Stores, Minor’s Printing Company, Peppers Restaurant, Pet Place, Row by Row Bookstore, Snips Hair Salon, Watauga Parks & Recreation, Watauga Swimming Pool Complex, Watauga Humane Society Shelter and WestGlo Spa.

“Everybody get out there and buy this calendar and help the humane society build the building,” Minor said.
