Watauga Humane Society Hosts Rummage
Sale Aug. 20, 21
By Mike Shands
One of the High Countrys largest rummage sales takes
place this weekend in Boone.
The Watauga Humane Society will hold its 22nd annual rummage
sale Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20 and 21 from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. each day at the National Guard Armory in Boone.
Dee Dundon, the humane societys president, said
volunteers have been working diligently this week to sort,
price and arrange items for the sale.
Were working very hard, she said. We
have had more volunteers this year. They have been awesome.
Each day we have had about 25 volunteers from the (Appalachian
State University) field hockey team.

Those volunteers have been helping move and sort items
such as doors, a Bloomin Onion machine, brand new
wooden blinds, a musical organ and Styrofoam peanuts.
Weve got a little bit of everything,
Dundon said.
One of the societys two largest fundraisers each
year, the rummage sale boasts a wide variety of items
for sale from appliances to clothes to sporting
goods to kitchen items. Other items available at the sale
will include shoes, dishes, skis, furniture, books, records,
jewelry, Christmas crafts, linens, toys and many more
categories.
This years sale will feature lower prices on several
items than previous years, including clothing, Dundon
said.
We will be selling most clothes, except for boutique
items, for $3 a bag all day Friday and $1.50 all day Saturday,
she said.
The sale will also include a vehicle auction Aug. 21 for
a 1986 Honda Civic.
Its hard to make much money off a quarter
a piece for things or a few dollars a bag, Dundon
said. It takes a lot of money to raise the equivalent
of a vehicle.
Those who cant attend the sale can still assist
the humane society by making a financial donation. In
fact this is a preferred method of helping.
Anyone donating funds should make checks payable to Watauga
Humane Society and mail them to Dr. Jan Watson
Treasurer, Watauga Humane Society, 200 Casey Lane, Boone,
N.C., 28607.

The humane societys normal operating hours for its
animal shelter are 12:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday
and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Its phone number
is (828) 264-7865.
Dundon said the humane societys Bare Bones Boutique
thrift shop will be closed Aug. 14-25 because of the rummage
sale.
