Biography
A former public school teacher, health care professional,
and co-chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Lieutenant
Governor Beverly Perdue has been a key figure in shaping
our states agenda for jobs and economic development,
educational excellence; and affordable, accessible healthcare;
for North Carolinas families.
Lieutenant Governor Perdue is a committed public servant
having served five terms in the Senate and two terms in
the state House of Representatives. As a legislator, she
was consistently ranked as one of the most effective members
of the North Carolina General Assembly and gained a reputation
for being one of our states hardest working legislators.
Her legislative successes include innovative education
measures as the Excellent Schools Act and Governor Hunts
Smart Start initiative for early childhood development.
She has also worked tirelessly to improve the quality
of long-term care for older adults and remains focused
on expanding home health care opportunities. As Senate
Appropriations co-chair, she helped craft our states
balanced budget from 1996-2000. As a result, she has earned
the reputation as a fiscally responsible fighter for the
needs of our people.
Perdue is Chair of the Health and Wellness Trust Fund
Commission, which has crafted a prescription drug plan,
a teen smoking prevention and cessation program and an
obesity prevention plan. At the request of Governor Easley,
she is leading our states efforts to protect our
military bases in the Department of Defenses base
realignment and closure process. She also serves on the
Rural Economic Development Center Board, the North Carolina
Economic Development Board, State Board of Education and
the State Board of Community Colleges. She is married
to Robert Eaves, a UNC grad and successful business entrepreneur.
She has two sons, Garrett and Emmett.
What three issues are most important and how will you
address them:
Ive been a trouble- shooter for key government issues:
defending our bases during BRAC 05, health and wellness,
strengthening education from pre-k to post grad, and economic
development and jobs.
As the Governors designee for BRAC 05, I am coordinating
the states strategy to protect our military bases
and mobilizing community leadership to make the case that
the military is a critical component of North Carolinas
economy contributing over $18 billion annually through
our base communities and 77 counties that are impacted
by the military. Through my efforts in leading BRAC 05
strategy, I will work to bring more missions and more
opportunity for procurement to North Carolina.
As chair of the Health and Wellness Trust Fund, I led
the State in creating our prescription drug plan that
has been called a model for the nation by the NC president
of AARP. In September, we expanded that plan to serve
more seniors. Weve initiated a teen tobacco prevention
and cessation program and a youth obesity program in addition.
Bringing more jobs and growing jobs in small business
is a top priority. Through my leadership on the State
Board of Education and State Board of Community Colleges,
we are offering displaced workers critical skills to re-enter
the job market. I will work to continue to offer state
of the art skills through our community colleges to train
displaced workers for 21st century jobs. I will continue
to work to strengthen our schools and bring technology
to every North Carolina school. These are my priorities
and I will continue to build on a record of practical
results.
