Cat Walk Fashion Show Benefits Watauga Humane Society Shelter

By Mike Shands

High Country residents can enjoy a day of boutique fashions while helping their furry friends at the Watauga Humane Society this month.

The humane society’s Bare Bones Boutique Thrift Store will hold its first Cat Walk Fashion Show Saturday, April 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Appalachian Cultural Museum. All money raised from the show will benefit the animals at the humane society’s shelter.

“This is just another way we hope to raise money for the shelter,” said Amy Gilman, a humane society volunteer and the event’s organizer. “We needed to get more fund-raisers for the humane society so I hope it’s really going to go well.”

During the show humane Society volunteers will model Bare Bones Boutique outfits, which will be for sale the day of the event for a minimum of $12. They will feature a wide variety of fashions and sizes for women, men and children.

At least two clothes racks worth of fashions from the boutique will be available for purchase, as will several Watauga County Christmas Cabbage Queen outfits. Known as Wandas, the Cabbage Queens are famous for wearing tiaras and green dresses in their efforts to raise funds for OASIS. They frequently find items for their outfits at Bare Bones Boutique.

All clothing featured in the show has been donated to the boutique.

Only 100 tickets to the event are available at $5 apiece. The deadline to purchase tickets is Saturday, April 16. They are available at Bare Bones Boutique, at the humane society’s shelter, from humane society board members and from boutique volunteers.

The ticket price also includes a light lunch of finger sandwiches, vegetable platters, fruit trays, dips, pita bread and salads.

The fashion show will feature raffles for items donated in either new or excellent used condition. Some of the raffle items will include a Gucci handbag, a Franklin Mint knife, antique pottery and a sterling silver turquoise ring.

Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 apiece. Those purchasing raffle tickets don’t have to be present to win.

Gilman said she appreciated the cultural museum for providing facilities for the show at no cost. She also thanked Blue Skies for donating several home décor items for the raffle.

Bare Bones Boutique is located at 153 Don Hayes Road near Old Highway 421 South in Rutherwood, across from the Rutherwood Baptist Church. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call the thrift store at (828) 264-7339 for more information about the fashion show.

The Appalachian Cultural Museum is located at 400 University Hall Drive in Boone. Call the museum at (828) 262-3117 for detailed directions.

A Buck Can Change Their Luck

Appalachian State University’s Watauga Animal Guardian Society (WAGS) is holding its A Buck Can Change Their Luck fundraiser now through Wednesday, April 13.

Funds collected will help subsidize the spay/neuter program for pet owners who can’t afford Watauga Humane Society’s low-cost clinic.

Donation bins will be located on countertops of participating businesses across town, and WAGS club members will operate several donation stations on ASU’s campus. WAGS is requesting $1 from each passer-by to help reduce pet overpopulation. For more information contact Monica at asuwags@gmail.com.
