Blue Ridge Community Theatre Holds Auditions For Fall Performance

The Blue Ridge Community Theatre will hold auditions for this fall’s production of “The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree” Sunday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Watauga High School auditorium.

Performance dates for the play, which is based on the book by Gloria Houston and adapted for Stage by Virginia Satcher, will be Nov. 25–27 and Dec. 2-3.

The play’s plot involves a town where a different family promises a Christmas tree for the town’s Christmas play each year. This year Ruthie’s family is responsible for the tree. In the spring she and her father mark the tree that they will donate in December.

Her father is called to war, though. After the armistice has been declared her father still hasn’t returned. Ruthie and her mother climb to the rocky crag one evening and bring the perfect Christmas tree and leave it at the church.

The next evening after the play in which Ruthie was the angel she receives two gifts – a beautiful treetop angel that her mother made especially for the tree and her father returning home from the war.

Those auditioning for the play’s lead character parts should look about the age listed: Ruthie (singer) – 7 years old, Mama (singer) – 25 years old and Papa (singer) – 25 to 30 years old. Other leader characters include Miss Jenny (singer) – the teacher in a one-room schoolhouse and Preacher Otis (singer) – the preacher at Pine Grove Church.

Other parts include townspeople, school children ages 5 to 15 (speaking and singing roles), a children’s chorus for the Christmas pageant, Charity – an adult woman with a small role and a solo plus additional women and men for small roles and the adult chorus.

Everyone auditioning for leads and solos will be asked to sing one verse of “Silent Night.”
