Ski Slope Plans Continue
For Phoenix Mountain Property
By Fawn Roark
Vincent Properties of Blowing Rock and Prestige Builders
of Florida are partnering together to purchase the Phoenix
Mountain property and recently announced their current
plans to build a ski slope there. Representatives of the
groups attended the Jefferson aldermen meeting Monday
night to ask the town to resign a letter promising the
developers access to sewer and water.
A letter had previously been signed by the town aldermen
to Eric Hunter, former property owner, stating that the
town would provide 150,000 gallons of water and sewer
a day to the property. The aldermen voted unanimously
to sign the letter again stating the same intent with
the new property owners.
Jay Vincent of Vincent Properties said they hope to actively
begin planning with the town as to the best feasible way
to get the water and sewer access to the Phoenix Mountain
Property very soon. He and other representatives also
discussed possible financing options for the project and
said they will continue researching those along with County
Economic Development Director Pat Mitchell and others.
Mayor Dana Tugman also mentioned the possibility of the
town being able to locate a well somewhere on the Phoenix
Mountain Property. Vincent said he felt as though that
could be a possibility. It appears to me that could
be a win-win situation and those are the kid of situations
that work best, he noted.
Vincent spoke very highly of the community leaders, government
officials and the people here whom he has worked with
so far. Thank you for signing the letter to us.
Everybody that we have dealt with has been extremely helpful.
This has been a positive situation for us so far,
Vincent said. He also mentioned all of the help and assistance
that County Economic Development Director Pat Mitchell
has provided to them.
Vincent also attended the last county commissioners
meeting when he gave an update to the board about their
current plans for the project. At the March Jefferson
Aldermen meeting, Vincent said he was born in the area
and has lived in the northwest NC mountains for 33 years
so he has only the best interest of the county and town
at heart.
At this point, they are planning to use an Adirondack
style at the ski slope with a timber frame look with bark
exterior. He said he believed a lot of good jobs and a
large number of tourists will positively impact the local
economy.
Phoenix Mountain has an altitude of over approximately
4,600 feet, a ¾ mile long 300-400 foot cliff face,
a mile of highway frontage, the 150,000 gallons per day
of sewage and water capacity, unspoiled mountain streams,
is located only two miles from a high-growth, historic
village and has no zoning restrictions.
