Home Builders Association Donates Tools To Vocational Classes

By Fawn Roark

The Ashe County Home Builders Association donated approximately $2,500 in tools to the vocational classes at Ashe County High School last week. This donation came as the result of the Association wanting to do something to help the community and make a positive impact on it.

Chairman Darrell Hamilton of the Home Builders Association was very pleased with what they were able to do to help the High School Vocational classes. “We made contact with Mrs. Lowder at the school and talked to her about what the vocational department needed in the way of tools. This is our way of giving back to the community. Some of us came to the school and talked with the teachers. We got a list together of the tools they needed. They really needed tools for outdoor projects like a gas powered masonry saw, a portable table saw, portable skihl saw, drills and more,” Hamilton explained.

Vocational Teacher Steve Scott said he and the other teachers are very grateful for the donation made to the Association. “This is great. These guys came out to the school to learn more about the programs at the high school. They talked to us to see what our needs were and we told them. Then we received all this and we really appreciate it. It will really help the kids and make it easier when we are doing real life projects, which we do a lot of. We appreciate it so much,” Scott noted. He added that the vocational classes have done much work at the school and in the community as well.

The Home Builders Association will be holding a fundraising event on Saturday, Oct. 14th at Ashe County High School and all proceeds will go towards a vocational scholarship they will be providing. The event includes a prime rib dinner for two and will begin at 5 p.m. “There are a lot of academic scholarships out there, but no vocational scholarships are currently being offered,” Hamilton noted.

A reverse raffle will be held with lots of door prizes totaling an estimated $10,500 including the grand prize of $7,000. There will be 300 tickets sold for the event and odds are estimated to be 1 in 23, according to coordinators.
