The Legendary Emmylou Harris Performs October 21
As Part of Appalachian State University’s Performing Arts Series

Emmylou Harris

Grammy Award-winning legend of country, rock and folk Emmylou Harris will perform at Appalachian State University’s Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday, October 21. Generously sponsored by SkyBest Communications, this special event is a part of Appalachian’s Performing Arts Series. The concert is general admission, and begins at 8pm with an opening set by up-and-coming talent Teddy Thompson.

Hailed as a major figure in several of America’s most important musical movements Emmylou Harris is a steadfast supporter of roots music and a skilled interpreter of compelling songs who has been associated with a diverse array of admiring collaborators. Her contributions to country-rock, the bluegrass revival, folk music, and the Americana movement are widely praised, and in recent years she also has perfected a sound that is distinctly her own.

For over 30 years, Harris has flowed effortlessly among genres, achieving popularity in pop, folk, country and now alternative. The common bridge is a wonderful vocal style and a gift for discovering the heart of a song. Billboard Magazine has called her a “truly venturesome, genre-transcending pathfinder.” Throughout her career, she has been admired for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur, and to reiterate this point are her 11 Grammy Awards, recognition as a Lifetime Achievement Performer at the Americana Music Awards and numerous other awards and inductions.

Harris is one of the most admired and influential women in contemporary country music, but her scope extends far beyond that genre. She has recorded with such diverse artists as Ryan Adams, Beck, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Tammy Wynette, Neil Young, The Chieftains, Lyle Lovett, Roy Orbison, The Band, Willie Nelson and George Jones.

Teddy Thompson, born in 1976 in London, formed his first band in his early teens. At age 18, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began to pursue a musical career in earnest, writing songs, recording demos and playing live solo gigs. The growing buzz of his budding career won Thompson a deal with Virgin Records, which released his solo debut, Teddy Thompson, in 2000. He went on to record a self-released six-song EP, Blunderbuss, and to tour as part of Rosanne Cash’s band. His latest recording, Separate Ways, released in February 2006, demonstrates the assurance and experience that Thompson has gained in the years since his solo debut.

Emmylou Harris’ performance on October 21 is part of the 2006-07 Performing Arts Series presented by Appalachian State University’s Office of Arts and Cultural Programs.

The Performing Arts Series would be unable to present and publicize its wide range of programming without critical funding sources, including a group of outstanding corporate and media sponsors that are dedicated to promoting the arts in our region. In addition to a generous sponsorship from SkyBest Communications, the series benefits greatly from the support of twelve media sponsors: The Mountain Times, All About Women Magazine, the High Country News, Mountain Television Network, Charter Communications, Mix 102.3FM, 100.7 MAC FM, WFDD 88.5FM, WDAV Classical 89.9FM, WETS 89.5FM, WNCW 88.7FM and WASU 90.5FM.

The 2006-07 Performing Arts Series is a presentation of Appalachian State University’s Office of Arts and Cultural Programs. The mission of the series is to support the teaching mission of Appalachian State University by presenting a diverse array of music, dance, and theatre events designed to enrich the cultural landscape of the campus and surrounding region. By creating memorable performance experiences and related educational and outreach activities, the series promotes the power and excitement of the live performance experience, provides a “window on the world” through the artistry of nationally and internationally renowned artists and showcases some of the finest artists of our campus community and our region.

Tickets to the October 21 Emmylou Harris performance are $28 for adults, $26 for seniors, ASU faculty and staff, and $20 for all students. For tickets or information, call 800-841-ARTS(2787) or 828-262-4046, or visit www.pas.appstate.edu.
