This-coming Saturday at Todd's Cook Memorial park, Wayne
Henderson and Helen White will take the stage. One of the greatest
guitar players around will do his lightning-fast pinch picking,
along with fiddling, banjo picking, and sweet singing by the lady,
as the two present a broad array of Appalachian music. Wayne and
Helen will present the third concert in this year's Todd Summer
Music Series, from 2 to 4 PM at Walter and Annie Cook Memorial
Park in beautiful downtown Todd.

The Todd Summer Music Series is presented by the Todd Community
Preservation Organization (TCPO), the nonprofit organizers of
summer events in the park by Elk Creek and the New River. The
Saturday-afternoon concerts are free, with donations accepted
and encouraged. Attendees should bring a chair, sunscreen -- and
an umbrella.
Coming all the way from Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, Wayne and Helen
are always eagerly welcomed at the Friday-night jams in the Todd
General Store. Back in 2003, they even invited NPRs American
Routes and ABCs Nightline to sit in on
the jam as part of a radio/TV show about Wayne that aired that
spring.
Wayne is known worldwide both for his playing and for the beautiful
guitars, mandolins, and banjos he crafts in his shop in Rugby.
His awards are too numerous to mention, and his recordings are
always popular. Helen, a native North Carolinian, has been playing
old-time fiddle and singing folk songs since college. Also a composer,
she has written many childrens songs, and produced an album,
Nobody Smiles Like Me: Songs for a Kinder World, in
1999.
Helens simple, strong backup on guitar and banjo provides
a solid foundation for Waynes amazing guitar wizardry. Together,
they take their listeners on a visit to an Appalachian porch --
an excellent place to be on a summer Saturday afternoon.
