License to Win

ASU homecoming this weekend

The name is State. Appalachian State.

Never shaken, but sometimes stirred, is the Appalachian State University family, all members of which are invited to attend the university’s 2007 homecoming celebration, aptly titled ’007: License to Win.
As the Mountaineer football team attempts a third consecutive championship, alumni, students, faculty and staff are invited to take part in a precarious mission of celebration, reunion and team support. Further, the mission must be accomplished in two days — Oct. 5 and 6, the first weekend in October.

Friday, Oct. 5

Spirit Under the Stars
From 6 to 9 p.m. on the Duck Pond Field off Stadium Drive, visitors are tasked with showing their Mountaineer spirit, beginning with a lip sync contest and concluding with a pep rally, bonfire, live music and fireworks.
Featuring the Marching Mountaineers, cheerleaders, Yosef the Mountaineer and the football team, the event is sponsored by Appalachian Student Programs, Athletics and Alumni Association.

Never Say Never DJ Dance Party
Never saying never again may prove somewhat difficult, so folks are invited to dance instead. DJ Sain (class of ’84) will turn the tables on guests for a night of dancing.
Held at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center from 9:30 p.m. to midnight, participants are invited to enjoy a vodka martini (shaken, not stirred), along with beer, wine and mixers. However, attendees are asked to bring their own liquor.
This particular event is sponsored by homecoming patrons.

Hypnotist Dr. Jim Wand
Sponsored by APPS Special Events, homecomers are invited to test their mental mettle against hypnotist Dr. Jim Wand at 9 p.m. at Farthing Auditorium. This event is free, with general admission seating.

Saturday, Oct. 6

Appalachian Friends Breakfast
From 9 to 10 a.m. at the McKinney Alumni Center, alumni and friends may exercise their license to munch. The meal is complimentary, though those planning to attend should RSVP.

Homecoming Parade
From Boone with love, the town has granted Appalachian use of its downtown roadways for a homecoming parade. The parade starts at the Raley Hall parking lot on Rivers Street, turns up Depot Street to proceed down King Street and end past the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
The parade, which is sponsored by the Student Government Association, starts at 10:30 a.m.

Mountaineer Walk
At 11 a.m. in Tomlinson Park, Appalachian family members can enjoy the living daylights by cheering the Mountaineers football team, as players walk from the Owens Field House to their pregame meal.
Fans are encouraged to line the sidewalks from the Duncan Hall underground tunnel through Tomlinson Park, between Newland and Trivette halls.

License to Grill Tailgate
Also at 11 a.m., tailgating will commence on the Duck Pond Field off Stadium Drive. Offering local food vendors, music and reunion activities, this activity for alumni and friends is sponsored by the Appalachian Alumni Association and Student Program.

Family Fun Zone
Yosef, a.k.a. the Man with the Golden Fun, invites families with young children to enjoy inflatable playgrounds and visits by the Marching Mountaineers.
The fun zone will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sanford Mall. Free parking is located at the new parking deck adjacent to Belk Library.

Class Reunions
Alumni and friends will be able to bond over old times at the alumni headquarters tent on Duck Pond Field. All members from the classes of 2002, 1997, 1992, 1987, 1982 and 1977 are invited to drop by at noon.
Classmates are forever, and attendees may view reunion directories on display to find old friends. In addition, complimentary class reunion buttons, unique to each year, will be available.

Yosef Clubroom
For Yosef’s eyes only, this event is exclusive to Yosef Club members, who may partake in complimentary food and drink at the Owens Field House. The time is yet to be announced.

Appalachian State vs. Gardner-Webb Football Game
Fans will have a view to a thrill at 2:30 p.m., as they cheer on the back-to-back national champions, the Appalachian State University Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers’ mission is to eliminate the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, and fans may take part by calling 1-800-919-APPS for advance tickets.

Step Show and DJ Dance
To live and let dance, a dance and step show will be held at 8 p.m. at Legends, located off Hardin Street. This particular event is sponsored by the National Panhellenic Council, APPS Council for Cultural Awareness and African American Alumni Council.

Shaken, Not Stirred Post-Game Party
Attendees are expected to dress their best for this occasion, similar to a posh night at Casino Royale. From 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., guests may dance to the music of The Entertainers, while also enjoying heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

As with the Friday dance, attendees are asked to bring their own liquor. Tickets cost $18 in advance and $20 at the door.
