Christmas in the Mountains sees
second release
New CD shipment arrives this week to benefit Hunger Coalition

With nearly two weeks left until Christmas, there’s still music in these hills and plenty of it as the second batch of “Christmas in the Mountains” CDs hits the store shelves on Friday.

The first 2,000 sold like hotcakes with requests for more bringing the producers back to the table in rapid response.

It’s been the topic of many conversations since its release party in November – a project that is causing quite a stir around these parts, with voices of kith and kin ringing out in honor of one of the High Country’s most valuable non-profit agencies.

As recipient of the proceeds from this inaugural hit, the Hunger and Health Coalition of Boone, serving Avery, Watauga and Ashe counties will be able to feed a few more families and help individuals experiencing economic hardship and food shortages. It’s what they do best, but not without the continued assistance and generosity of the community.

The CD, having made its way to numerous locations across the area in the last month, combines the talents of area vocalists, musicians, producers and engineers – all sharing a common bond in their efforts to stamp out hunger.

Featuring talented hometown artists who are helping to capture the spirit of the season, the project includes the music and voices of Amantha Mill, the Greenes, St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church Choir, First Presbyterian Church Choir, the Santa Claus String Band, Rumple Presbyterian Church Choir, Rebecca Witt, Jessica Presnell, Todd Wright Quartet and Laura Kaufman.

The selections include a wide range of music, from traditional Christmas hymns to a moving bagpipe arrangement to original bluegrass, jazz and everything in between.

Compton Fortuna, director of the Hunger and Health Coalition has on numerous occasions expressed her sincere appreciation for the time and effort the community has put into the CD project, in general, resounding comments of Gayle Henson, president of the board of directors, who praised Crae Morton for his innovation, foresight and energy in making the CD a reality.

It was through Morton’s personal experience that made it all possible, the idea conceived during last year’s Christmas musical at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock.

Leslie Shavell, board member of the Hunger and Health Coalition and described as the spark that kept the flame burning when the idea was first mentioned, said the entire production costs were covered early-on “by the generous donations of our community,” and that each $10 spent on a CD will go directly to assisting “more and more people.”

She added, “The Hunger and Health Coalition would like to thank all the people who have purchased the ‘Christmas in the Mountains’ CD. Because of the overwhelming response, many locations have sold out. We will have a shipment coming in on Dec. 14. If your favorite location is sold out, please check the list for other locations that may have CDs. There will be enough available for everyone to purchase a last minute Christmas gift and help feed the hungry in our community. “
