‘Christmas in the Mountains’
takes bite out of hunger
CD Sales yield 100,000 pounds of food

Since it was announced early last year that a proposed CD would raise money to help feed the hungry in the area, there’s been nothing but excitement surrounding the music project.

Fast forward 10 months and listen to the rest of the story — it’s nothing but sweet music to the ear and heart of the High Country.

According to Leslie Shavell, representing the Hunger and Health Coalition’s board of directors and coordinator of the CD project, sales figures prove that the CD has surpassed the greatest hopes of everyone involved.

“The community was so generous in their purchases that the proceeds will allow us to buy over 100,000 pounds of food to be distributed to the hungry in our area. We, at the Hunger and Health Coalition, want to express our sincere gratitude for the overwhelming response to the ‘Christmas in the Mountains’ CD project. The retail locations were so generous to let us have a space in the very busy holiday season. We want to thank Crae Morton for bringing this exciting idea to us and for all his work on the project. We appreciate all the performers, production people, record keepers and delivery folks who donated so much of their time and talent.”

She adds a personal “Thank you, Mort,” for all your help.”

A new year, a new CD
Coming as no surprise to anyone, and no sooner than the Christmas decorations have been put away, Shavell said the CD committee has begun to meet and discuss plans for a repeat performance for 2008.

“So many people have been asking if we are going to do another one. The answer is a resounding yes and will even include more songs but at the same affordable $10 price,” she said.

Shavell is ready to enlist the help of those same businesses which carried the CD during the inaugural year, and all others who would like to help in the coming year.

“We would like to ask those businesses to give us a call if they are willing to give us space for the CDs next year, as well as those folks who would like to donate their talents and music to the next CD,” she said.

Entries will be reviewed immediately for inclusion in the coming year’s project. Shavell added, “We will be asking for grants and donations to cover the costs of production in 2008, just as we did in 2007. Our costs were completely covered in 2007 before we even started production, thanks to so many generous folks.”

Businesses, individuals and groups wishing to participate in any way should leave a message at the Hunger and Health Coalition offices at (828) 262-1628 as soon as possible. More information on the CD will be released as details are made available through the committee.

How the CD is already helping others
As a reminder of the far-reaching effects of each $10 spent on a music CD and donations previously given to the Hunger and Health Coalition, consider the fact that in December alone, 446 boxes of food were distributed, 1,074 prepared meals were handed out and 264 Healthy Start bags were given to needy children.

All this is in addition to 7,495 pounds of produce, 6,564 pounds of bread and 2,103 pounds of meat distributed to the needy.

Also, filled prescriptions totaled 547, with a retail value of $99,814. (The Hunger Coalition gives a special thanks to six donors in the medical field who provided $36,972 worth of samples.)

Shavell reminds area physicians that donations of their pharmaceutical samples go a long way.

Not only do the Hunger and Health Coalition staff and volunteers work diligently to keep the High Country healthy and adequately nourished, they also work in coordination with Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church in Boone to provide wood for heat through the Helping Hands Wood Lot, available to clients through the winter months.
