Ashe Home Builders donate tools to Ashe High School

The board of the Ashe County Home Builders Association met at Ashe County High School Jan. 29 to donate
over $3,500 worth of new tools to the Vocational Department.

It's the second time in three years the association has made a tool donation to the High School. Combined, the value of all donated tools has been over $5,500.

Steve Scott, 2007 North Carolina Vocational Teacher of the Year, said because of budget constraints, the tool donations have served a real need at the High School.

"We really appreciate what the Home Builders Association has done for our department and school," he said. "The tools they have donated have helped us give our students the real world training they need to enter the construction industry and find good paying jobs."

Besides supporting the Vocational Department with tool donations - which were provided at cost by Parker Tie Company - the Ashe County Home Builders Association has also started a Vocational Student of the Month Program sponsored by West Jefferson Chevrolet. 2007 student winners included Amanda Ham, Robbie Wurth, Cody Jones, Kenneth Faircloth, and Daniel Farmer.

The Home Builders also offer special scholarships to those Ashe County High School seniors who are interested in pursuing either a 2 year or 4 year degree in any construction trade. More information about approaching deadlines and applying for these 2008-2009 scholarships can be found on the Home Builders website, www.ashehomebuilders.com

The Ashe County Home Builders generally meet on the second Thursday of every month at Jefferson Station, in downtown West Jefferson. Check their website for exact dates and times. The public is invited to attend and can pay for their meals at the door.

Each meeting includes time for networking, recognition of the Student of the Month, announcements, and a 20-30 minute educational program. The February Speaker will be Mr. Steve Tedder from the North Carolina DENR division of Water Quality.

The Home Builders also announced their 2008 officers include President Dub Lewis and board members Natalie Lambert, David Hodgson, Kevin Reed, Matt Rumfelt, Mike Shatley, Gwynita Steele, Warren Shepherd, and Maria Whaley.
