Appalachians Jazz Ensemble II
performs at Hayes Center Friday

Appalachian State University has a well earned reputation
as one of the leading schools in jazz studies and performance
in the Southeast. A quick listen to one of the Hayes School of
Musics many fine jazz ensembles will confirm the truth of
that reputation.
ASUs Jazz Ensemble
II takes the stage at the Hayes Performing Arts Center
in Blowing Rock February 15th.

ASUs Jazz Ensemble II, under the direction of instructor
Rod Berry, will present a night of big band jazz, classic swing
music and romantic torch ballads. The concert will be held at
the Mariam and Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing
Rock on Friday, February 15th starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission
is $5 per person.
ASUs Jazz Ensemble II features the best in faculty and student
jazz performers. The concert is part of an ongoing collaboration
between the Hayes Performing Arts Center and ASUs Hayes
School of Music. More events will be added as dates are confirmed.

Upcoming Hayes Center Events
Multi-instrumentalist and singer John McEuen, the founding member
of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, will perform a special solo concert
at the Hayes Center on Saturday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m. Tickets
are $20 for adults and $15 for students.
Grammy-nominated acoustic guitarist Alex de Grassi will perform
a concert of his innovative original compositions on Saturday,
March 8th at 7:30 p.m. His genre-busting tunes blur the lines
between classical, folk and jazz and his finger-picking techniques
are nothing short of out of this world! Tickets are
$20 for adults and $15 for students.
One of North Carolinas favorite sons, Mike Cross, returns
to the High Country for a concert on Saturday, March 15th at 7:30
p.m. A master of multiple styles including folk, blues and Celtic,
Cross repertoire of beloved songs includes Nobby,
The Scotsman, The Drunkard and The
Great Strip Poker Massacre. Tickets are $26 for adults and
$20 for students.
The ASU Gospel Choir presents an evening of inspirational music
at the Hayes Center on Thursday, March 20th at 7:30 p.m. Conducted
by Jason Thompson, the ASU Gospel Choirs features over 50 voices
singing in the Southern African-American tradition. All tickets
are $5.
Emmy Award-winning actor Anthony Zerbe brings his one-man show,
Its All Done with Mirrors, to the Hayes Center for a show
on Thursday, March 21st at 7:30 p.m. The show is based on the
life and work of 20th century poet e.e. cummings. Zerbe mesmerizes
his audience with a dazzling display of characters, accents and
clever wordplay. Tickets are $26 for adults and $20 for students.
ASUs Hayes School of Music will present Street Scene at
the Hayes Center Thursday through Saturday, April 3-5 at 8 p.m.
and Sunday, April 6th at 2 p.m. The Appalachian State University
Opera will present this American opera, with music by Kurt Weill
and lyrics by Langston Hughes. Street Scene takes place in New
York City in 1946 and deals with a petty squabble between neighbors
that builds into a tragic confrontation. Tickets are $18 for adults
and $9 for students.
The Hayes Centers entertainment calendar comes full circle
on Wednesday, April 9th with the return of ASU Jazz. The Hayes
School of Musics ASU Jazz Ensembles I & II present an
evening of great big band standards, conducted by instructors
Rod Berry and Todd Wright. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and all
tickets are $5.
