Summer activities abound for area youth

For many children, warm weather means more than a break from school;
it means its time for summer camp. Camp gives children the
opportunity to use their time off to learn, explore and meet new
friends. Here are a few of the opportunities being offered throughout
the High Country this summer.
Appalachian State University Athletic and Academic Camps
Sports Camps include baseball, basketball, soccer, field hockey,
football, cheerleading, fastpitch softball, track and field,
volleyball and wrestling.
Academic Camps include forensic science camp, math camp, community
outreach programs, SAT preparation course and Community Music
School.
Location: ASU Campus, Boone.
Ages: Camps vary and there is a camp for pretty much
any age group.
Dates: Camps are offered throughout the summer and range
in length from one to five days.
Fees: $75 to $390

Blowing Rock Parks and Recreation Summer Day Camp offers
swimming and sports at the towns facilities. Campers go
on various field trips, including to local attractions, such
as Grandfather Mountain and Tweetsie Railroad. They will also
travel to a Hickory Crawdads game and have the opportunity to
go horseback riding and whitewater rafting or tubing on the
New River.
Location: Blowing Rock, various field trips
Ages: Rising first through seventh graders.
Dates: June 9 through Aug. 1, weekdays.
Fees: Rising first and second graders: $40 for Blowing
Rock taxpayers and $95 for others. Third through seventh graders:
$50 Blowing Rock taxpayers and $110 for others.

Blowing Rock Stage Companys Theater CAMPservatories
offer a variety of week-long day camps with themes, including
musical theater, the ins and outs of show business, improvisation,
play production, stage combat, storytelling and the technical
aspects of theater. Camps are taught by theater professionals
and many are visited by designers, actors, directors and musicians
from across the country.
Location: Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock
Ages: Vary, depending on camp program.
Dates: Camps are held each week, starting June 2 and
ending Aug. 1.
Fees: $100 to $175. Prior TOPs students receive a 10
percent discount and tuition waivers are available for those
who qualify. Each student who enrolls receives a complimentary
ticket to see one of the Blowing Rock Stage Companys summer
productions.

Camp Broadstone offers summer enrichment programs for
academically gifted youth that are designed to encourage and
foster intellectual, social and physical growth. Campers attend
enrichment programs in the morning and participate in adventure
activities in the afternoons.
Location: Valle Crucis, just outside of Boone.
Ages: Two-week sessions are open to fourth through ninth
graders. Explorer sessions are open to fourth through sixth
graders.
Dates: Sessions vary in length and are available throughout
the summer, starting on June 15 and finishing Aug. 1.
Fees: The two-week sessions are $1,750 and one-week Explorer
sessions cost $1,000. Limited scholarship funds based on financial
need are available.

Camp Broadstones Day Camp is a new program offering
campers an opportunity to sample the activities resident campers
get to experience while returning home each evening. Day campers
participate in enrichment classes, adventure activities and
field trips.
Location: Valle Crucis
Ages: Fourth through sixth graders.
Dates: Weekly sessions are offered throughout the summer,
beginning June 16 and ending Aug. 1.
Fees: $250 per week.

Camp Cheerio is a YMCA camp offering horseback riding,
aquatics, sports, creative arts, nature study and day trips.
Cheerio Extreme offers backpacking, climbing, rappelling, canoeing
and kayaking, and white water rafting.
Ages: Seven to 15 years old.
Dates: Cheerio offers camps ranging in length from five
days to two weeks. Co-ed camps are offered from July 6 to Aug.
15. All-girls camps last from June 1 to July 5. Adventure camps
are offered throughout the summer.
Fees: Vary, depending on length of the camp. Traditional camp
ranges from $600 to $1,520. Adventure camp tuitions range from
$864 to $1,799.

Camp Sky Ranch offers specialized camping experiences
for developmentally and mentally disabled individuals. Daily
activities include arts and crafts, boating, horseback riding,
swimming and a variety of sports and nature activities.
Location: Blowing Rock
Ages: All ages.
Dates: Camp Sky Ranch offers two-week sessions starting
on June 22 and ending Aug. 2.
Fees: $1,200 for each two-week session.

Celtic Unicorn Horse Stables will be offering its annual
Summer Horseback Riding Camp. The camp focuses on beginning
horseback riding mixed with craft activities, music, games and
a bit of Scottish heritage. Campers will learn the basics of
horseback riding and respectful horsemanship, as well as how
to safely care for and interact with horses.
Location: Boone
Ages: Seven to 15 years old.
Dates: Week-long sessions start in early June and end
in mid August. For ages seven to 10, the camp runs from 10 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. For 11- to 15-year-olds, sessions last from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fees: $325 for ages seven to 10, $425 for 11 to 15.

Cre8tive Drama Day Camp offers a week-long day camp
focusing on drama and movement. ASU faculty member Gordon Hensley
will serve as the workshops facilitator.
Location: ASUs I.G. Greer Studio Theater
Ages: Six to 16 years old.
Fees: $50 for Turchin Center members, $75 for others.

High Country Home Health and Hospices Camp Sunshine
assists children who have been affected by the death of a family
member or loved one within the past year. The camp provides
support and guidance through activities, such as games, music,
storytelling, puppet shows and art. Older campers can serve
as junior counselors.
Locations and Dates: Watauga: Oak Grove Baptist Church
in Boone, June 16 through 18. Ashe: Ashe Baptist Campground,
June 23 through 25. Allegany: Lions Club Pavilion in Sparta,
June 30 through July 2. Camps are held each day from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
Ages: Six to 18 years old.
Fees: Free.

Holston Presbytery Camp offers a small group camping
structure and activities, such as canoeing, hiking, caving,
rock climbing, rappelling, crafts, rafting, backpacking and
Bible study.
Location: Banner Elk
Ages: Vary, depending on camp session. Range from eight
to 17 years old.
Dates: The camp offers week-long sessions starting on
June 15 and ending July 25.
Fees: Vary depending on age and camp session. Range from
$370 to $515.

Lutheridge and Lutherock offer summer camping experiences
that focus on teamwork and Bible study. Activities at Lutheridge
include swimming, crafts, games, canoeing, hikes and a low-ropes
course. Lutherock offers campers outdoor adventure programs,
including rafting, backpacking, caving, rock climbing and rappelling,
in addition to more traditional camp experiences.
Location: Lutheridge is located in Arden, and Lutherock
is in Newland.
Ages: Camps sessions vary, ranging from first to 12th
grades.
Dates: Each camp offers weekly sessions starting on June
1 and ending Aug. 9.
Fees: Vary, depending on age and session. Range from
$399 to $589.

Marys School Summer Backyard takes advantage of
the summer weather with extended time outside. Campers will
participate in creative and play activities, as well as Montessori
math, language, sensorial and geography activities.
Ages: Two to nine, with older students acting as junior
assistants.
Dates: June 9 to Aug. 1. Morning sessions last from 8
a.m. to 12 p.m. and children should bring a lunch.
Fees: Five mornings (Monday through Friday): $100
Three mornings (Monday, Wednesday, Friday): $68
Two Mornings (Tuesday and Thursday): $49
Extended hours (lasting until 4 p.m.) are available for $25
per day.

Merri-Mac for Girls is a non-denominational Christian
camp offering horseback riding, gymnastics, diving, rock climbing,

six days to six weeks. Sessions start June 8 and end Aug. 9.

Mountain Quest offers two six-day sessions of a day
camp, providing campers the opportunity to experience local
natural wonders, while learning about the environment and themselves.
Location: Blowing Rock Conference Center with field trip
throughout the area.
Ages: Nine to 12 years old.
Dates: June 9 through 14 and June 23 through 28. Camp
days last from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Fees: $550, includes transportation, lunch and fees.

clay, painting, toy making, book making, masks, beading, puppet

activities in a Christian setting.

Watauga County 4-H will be taking a group of youth to
the Betsy-Jeff Center in Rockingham County, where they can commune
with the great outdoors.
Location: Betsy-Jeff Center in Rockingham County, near

Ages: 8 to 14 years old
Dates: July 13 through 18
Fees: Spots can be reserved for a $50 deposit and the
total fee of $290 will be due in July.

Watauga Arts Councils Summer Arts Camp will feature
the Missoula Childrens Theater and offer a week of drama,
storytelling and art. The week will end with a performance of
Robin Hood.
Location: Watauga High School
Ages: Rising first through 10th graders.
Dates: June 23 through 28. Runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
on Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to show time on Friday.
Performances are tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m on Friday and
3 p.m. for Saturday.
Fees: $110 per child.

Watauga County Parks and Recreations Fun in the Sun
Camp is a day camp offering swimming, art and physical activities.
Location: Hardin Park Elementary School

Dates: Six weeks long, starting June 16. Runs 7:30 a.m.
to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Fees: $70 per week
Summer Adventure Camp is a day camp offering a different theme
each week and campers can pick weeks they wish to attend.
Location: Watauga High School
Ages: Giggle Gang 5-7, Super Troopers 8-9, Explorers
10-13
Dates: Seven weeks long, starting June 16. Runs 7:30
a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Fees: $80 per week
