Mountain Alliance hosts Youth Service Day

Mountain Alliance members will be taking the organization’s commitment to service countywide next month, and youth throughout the county are invited to join in.

The organization will host a Youth Service Day on Saturday, April 26.

Students in the eighth through 12th grade are invited to register for the day of fun and service. They can find registration forms at the Mountain Alliance office or at the main office of their respective schools. Those interested must register by April 18.

Watauga County youth will not be the only ones to serve there communities that weekend. April 25 through 27 has been named Global Youth Service Day, with millions of young people around the world participating.

Mountain Alliance’s service day will concentrate on the needs of individuals and nonprofit groups throughout the county. The exact projects in which participants will take part, however, are a surprise. Participants will not find out what they will be doing until they arrive at the site.

The group of students planning the event said they want eighth graders to get involved in the service day, so that they could start to become oriented with high school and with Mountain Alliance. “We want to show that community service is something fun you can do with your friends,” Meg Holden, a member of the planning team, said.

The organization has held service days in the past, but this event will be the first in several years, Mountain Alliance executive director Todd Nolt said. He noted that the day of service is entirely youth planned. “I knew we had a great group of students who were capable of planning it,” he said.

Mountain Alliance is a nonprofit organization serving high school-aged residents of Watauga County through service and leadership-building projects, which concentrate on environmental stewardship and outdoor adventure. They operate in close partnership with Watauga County Schools. For more information about Mountain Alliance, go online to mountainalliance.org.
