Salty Dogs and Gangster Scalawags

A new seafood-and-steak ship is getting ready to dock on Blowing Rock Road in Boone.

Port Christopher’s Seafood and Steak will weigh anchor in the former location of Baxter’s Smokehouse on April 9.

The eatery will feature a lunch and dinner menu that will feature a 60- to 70-item salad bar, fresh seafood, including oysters and crab cakes, steaks, a renovated bar with a new offering of beers, and a few familiar faces from the Boone restaurant scene.

Jeff Austin, son of Mountain House owner Betty Austin, will helm the ship as co-owner. According to reliable sources, Austin has been involved in the restaurant business since before he could walk.

The restaurant is named in memory of Jeff’s brother, Chris, a musician who died in 1991, when a plane carrying seven of country singer Reba McEntire’s band members crashed, killing everyone on board.

Port Christopher’s Seafood and Steak is located at 1934 Blowing Rock Road in Boone. For more information, call (828) 268-9977.

Three-Year Stretch

They know it was you, Fredo.

The staff of the downtown pizzeria, named Capone’s Pizza & Bar after the legendary Chicagoland gangster, knows their customers as well as their own menu.

Co-owner Pete Shurba insists it’s the familiar faces of his long-time employees (Nancy Hanes, Nicole Taweel and Lorenzo DeLeon) and the flexibility of a menu lengthier than a hood’s rap sheet.

“It doesn’t seem like three years, I’ll tell you that,” Shurba said.

In true Capone style, Shurba and fellow owner Chris Staggs plan to party like it’s 1929 – only with different music and a restaurant riddled with anachronisms.

Though the pizzeria originally opened in March 2005, the anniversary celebration will take place April 5. Throughout the day, Capone’s will offer a meal special, as well as plenty of bootlegged loot, including T-shirts, baseball caps and other giveaways.

Music from area band Tidal will start around 8 p.m.

Capone’s Pizza & Bar is located at 454B W. King St. in downtown Boone. For more information, call (828) 265-1886 or visit www.caponesboone.com on the Web.
