Cross Carrier Chuck calls Boone “Most Unholy City”
Three-day journey through county results in frustration

You may have seen him carrying his large white cross on wheels through Watauga County this week. His name is Chuck Johnson, and although you may have seen him, he’s convinced you didn’t hear him.

Cross Carrier Chuck, as he is commonly known, walked through Watauga County this week, but claims that he was ignored by everyone he encountered.

“I’ve been on this journey since March 1st, 2000,” said Johnson, originally from Anaheim, California. “I’ve crossed the country eleven times. This is my first time in Boone.

“I haven’t talked to one soul and I’ve been here three days. It’s the most unholy city I’ve ever walked through.”

When he made these comments, Johnson was a few steps from crossing the Boone city limits toward Blowing Rock, and he seemed to be in a hurry to leave the town. He then compared Boone unfavorably to other places that have more sinful reputations.

“If I could say anything (to the people of Boone), I went through Las Vegas five times and people talked to me,” said Johnson. “And yet not even one soul in this county would say hello. I would say that God will probably put a tornado through this town. It’s going to perish, trust me.”

“It’s a very unholy place.”

Johnson has received notoriety from print, video and radio media since embarking on his journey. He has previously stated that the Lord will tell him when his job is finished.

When asked which of Jesus’ teachings he would most like to convey to the people of Boone. He replied “Get Baptized.”
