The Blue Ridge Intertribal Pow Wow Association invites everyone to come and experience a real Pow Wow.

Promising lots of Native American participation, the Pow Wow hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. There will be continuous entertainment that includes storytelling, flute playing, music by Native American Music Award nominee Dave Trezak, and drumming, singing and dancing by many Native American Indians.

There will be 20 Native American vendors with good handcrafted items, as well as Native food vendors with items like fry bread, Indian tacos, buffalo burgers and much more. Friday is also children’s day, so ask your kids to ask at school about attending the Pow Wow.

Grand entry will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.  Grand entry is when all the Native Americans gather and are led in by someone carrying the eagle staff, followed by all veterans and then the rest of the dancers.

The location of the Pow Wow is in Spruce Pine on  Hwy. 226 South between U.S. 19 and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mile Post 331 behind Music, Jewelry and Loan at 12513 South Hwy 226.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. For more information call (813) 765-3073 or (828) 765-1667.
Another Pow Wow at Ft. Hamby Park in Wilkesboro will be held Sept. 19-21, with admission to the park costing $1, and Pow Wow admission $5 for adults and $2 for children.

Dave Trezak and Vicky Hutto in Concert

Native American Music Award nominee Dave Trezak and Vicky Hutto will be giving a concert at the Carolina Theater in Spruce Pine on Sept. 11 to benefit two nonprofit organizations – the Carolina Theater and the Blue Ridge Intertribal Pow Wow Association.

The performance will take place in the historical “Carolina Barn Dance Theater” in Historical Downtown Spruce Pine. The theater is being rebuilt to its former glory when the original “Carolina Barn Dance” was broadcast over the airwaves in the ’50s. Many big country stars started on this stage as children, and the theater hosts performances almost every weekend.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. with both Trezak and Hutto entertaining with voice and flute music. Trezak is currently in the middle of doing two TV specials and recording a special song that he will be performing at the concert.

Tickets for the concert are $20 at the door and $18 in advance and are available at www.thecarolinabarndance.org . Tickets are on a first come first served basis, and only 240 seats are available.

For more information about the concert and Blue Ridge Intertribal Pow Wow, call (813) 765-3073.
