First High Country Beer Fest set for November 1
Beer Tasting in Boone, Beer Dinner in Blowing Rock

For years it was assumed that beer drinkers could never elevate the status of their brew to the level of wines. Over the past few decades, however, beer brewing and beer drinking have gained respect in the eyes, and in the taste buds, of a great number of discriminating drinkers.

The 1st Annual High Country Beer Fest will be held on Saturday, November 1. The Beer Fest will consist of two separate events: a beer tasting from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone, and a beer dinner pairing fine cuisine with hand-crafted beers from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock.

Beer Tasting

The High Country Beer Fest’s Beer Tasting in Boone is your chance to sample hundreds of craft and club beers. The event will feature educational seminars covering all aspects of beer, brewing, and the fine art of pairing beer with food.

A number of breweries and distributors are bringing beers to the event including Boone Brewing Company, All Good Brands, Bell’s Brewery, Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery, Highland Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Liberty Steakhouse and Brewery, Rock Bottom Brewery, Shmaltz Brewing Company, McAusland Brewing, Inc., Starr Hill Brewing Company, St. Peter’s Brewery, Sweetwater Brewing, Thomas Creek Brewing, Unibroue, Victory Brewing Company and Wychwood Brewing.

The event will also feature local beers created by members of the High Country Homebrewer’s Association.

Tickets for the event are $27 in advance and $35 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Peabody’s Wine and Beer Merchants and the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center.

Beer Dinner

The High Country Beer Fest’s Beer Dinner at Meadowbrook Inn will feature a six-course dinner matched with a six-pack of international beers.

The dinner will start with Orval Trappist Ale from Belgium paired with an appetizer of grilled coriander-encrusted pheasant skewers. Next up is the Chimay Red Trappist Dubbel (Belgium) paired with grilled venison en croute, caramelized onion and lingonberry sauce. England’s own Samuel Smith Nut Brown ale is then paired with chutney-glazed lamb loin on Lyonnaise potatoes. Another entrée pairing features the German Ayinger Oktoberfest Lager and roesti potato cakes with Black Forest ham. Desserts include the Great Divide Hercules Double IPA (USA) paired with an English berry trifle and North Coast Old Rasputin Imperial Stout paired with Belgian chocolate turtle ganache.

Tickets for the High Country Beer Fest’s Beer Dinner at Meadowbrook Inn are $50 per person. Advance tickets are available at The Blowing Rocket and the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center.

Sponsors of the 1st Annual High Country Beer Fest include Boone Brewing Company, Tryon Distributing, the High Country Chefs and Cooks Association, Village Real Estate, ISP, Wachovia and Appalachian Hospitality Management.
