Joe
Collins, the 2007 National Mountain Dulcimer champion, is coming
to Blowing Rock to do a concert on Oct. 25 in the Blowing Rock
Elementary School auditorium on Sunset Drive in Blowing Rock.
Described as hilarious and just plain entertaining, this singer/songwriter
from Shelby combines mountain dulcimer wizardry with solid vocals
for a show appropriate for all ages.
Collins performs and teaches regularly at festivals and other
venues across the country. He is recognized nationally for his
original songs, arrangements and voice.
Joining Collins will be guitarist Mike McGee, a long-time
friend and recording/performing partner. Together, they have
produced five CDs over the past 15 years and have been included
on a couple of mountain dulcimer collections.
Also sharing the stage with Collins and McGee will be Bob
and Melody Thomason of Cleveland, Ga. The Thomasons have been
delighting audiences all over the Southeast for nearly 30 years
with their blend of Appalachian music and Bobs outlandish
storytelling.
Keeping alive the traditions of the Southern mountains, the
duo performs the old ballads, as well as fiddle tunes and waltzes
on dulcimer, banjo and guitar. Bob is a well-known dulcimer
maker and player and won the Southern Regional Dulcimer Competition
in Mountain View, Ark. in 1989. Melody is the only daughter
of Rogers and Jo Magee, who founded the Dulcimer Shop in Blowing
Rock in 1971. Her brother, Bill, and his wife, Jewel, own and
operate the Dulcimer Shop.
The Dulcimer Shop of Blowing Rock invites all to join in an
evening of music on a very special instrument. The mountain
dulcimer is native to this part of the country, but its popularity
has been growing tremendously over the past several decades.
The concert will be Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Blowing Rock
School Auditorium on Sunset Drive. Admission is $10 adults and
$5 for children 14 and under. For more information, call Bill
or Jewel at (828) 295-3616 or contact by email at decaturmagee@aol.com.
