Beth Chorneau returns to Blowing Rock
Charlotte jazz singer at Meadowbrook Sunday

By Jeff Eason

Charlotte-based jazz singer Beth Chorneau will perform at the Meadowbrook Inn this weekend as part of the Blowing Rock Jazz Society’s Second Sunday concert series.

One of the Blowing Rock Jazz Society’s favorite performers, singer Beth Chorneau, returns to town this weekend for a special concert at the Meadowbrook Inn. This Second Sunday concert will take place on Sunday, October 12 beginning at 7 p.m.

Chorneau, an accomplished singer of pop tunes, torch songs and Broadway melodies, will perform with a number of western North Carolina jazz players. The repertoire will contain classic jazz, Latin jazz and new material.

A California native, Chorneau began singing in her father’s band while still in her early teens at jazz venues in the Los Angeles area. That early taste of being an integral part of the entertainment business, in a town that specializes in the entertainment business, helped steer the course of her career.

“I can remember being really young walking through downtown L.A. with David Benoit,” said Chorneau. “We had a gig in this theatre in Hollywood I believe it was. We were fearless back then.”

After marrying artist Raymond Chorneau, Beth and her family ultimately settled in western North Carolina. She now lives and works in Charlotte.

“Charlotte was all the things I wasn’t used to: humidity, mosquitoes, and I could sing seven days a week if I wanted to,” said Chorneau. “It was wonderful.”

During Chorneau’s multifaceted singing career, she has recorded albums, performed solo in a production of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Song And Dance, and has played in just about every jazz festival in the country.

“Singing brings me joy,” said Chorneau. “And I think others pick up on that as well. It’s always there…just like my faith…it’s always there.”

Los Angeles jazz legend David Benoit stated about Sliver of Time, “In a world of overly processed recordings featuring drum machines, samples, synthesizers, and vocals that can be tuned digitally, how nice it is to finally hear Beth Chorneau. Beth is a highly gifted vocalist who weaves acoustic instruments and hypnotic percussion grooves together with great original melodies.

“This record is soothing and sensuous, and yet full of wonderful surprises for the listener. This work is a combination of classic standards and fresh original songs. Beth Chorneau not only displays her talents as an elegant chanteuse, but as a talented songwriter as well.”
