Horns o
Plenty come to Legends Funk bands Hot Politics and Yo Mamas
Big Fat Booty Band at ASU on Oct. 23
By Jeff Eason
Every good funk band is measured, to some degree, by the
quality of its horn section. By that measuring stick, two of the
Souths best funk bands will converge on Legends in Boone
on Thursday, October 23rd.
Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty
Band return to Boone on October 23 for a funky show at
Legends.
Ashevilles Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band and Greensboros
Hot Politics perform at Legends on the campus of Appalachian State
in a show guaranteed to make the lamest dancer hit the floor with
tapping toes and shaking hips.
The show marks the start of the indoor concert season for a couple
of bands that have performed at numerous outdoor festivals this
past summer and fall.
Right now were getting ready for the Loki Festival
at Deerfields, said Jean Paul Miller, guitarist and vocalist
for Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band. Its sort of
the culmination of a long summer of touring for us. We played
in Las Vegas, Tallahassee, Hilton Head and all over the Southeast
this summer.
Miller is joined in the band by Al Al Ingram on bass and vocals,
Derrick Johnon on trombone and vocals, Greg Hollowell on saxophones
and vocals, Grady Gilbert on guitar and Dave Partin. Yo Mamas
Big Fat Booty Band have received numerous accolades in the past
few years including being named the Home Grown Music Networks
#1 Band of the Year, #3 album of the year in WNCW-FMs 2007
listeners poll for regional albums, and named in The Onions
list of Worst Band Names of 2007.
The bands 2006 album Now You Know won critical acclaim from
a variety of print and online media outlets. But its bread and
butter is the live show. The Booty Band performs a staggering
average of 250 shows per year.
Weve been recording a live album with an engineer
from New York City, said Miller. The recording has
been done at various shows in New Orleans, many of them at Tipitinas,
a fairly historical venue.
Miller added that the soon-to-be-released live album is tentatively
titled Greatest Hips, Vol. 2.
Hot Politics, one of the hottest new bands in Greensboro, features
Tommy Scifres on guitar and vocals, Jeff Hindson on bass, Phil
Clarke on drums, Jason Bullock on Euphonium, Adam Donahue on tenor
saxophone, and Kyle Poehling on drums and percussion. The bands
latest album, Get Loose, features funky original grooves accentuated
by swirling horn and keyboard lines.
