The 2008 Boone Clean-Up Day offered just less than a ton of fun
for participants in the Sept. 20 event.
According to Boone Public Works, volunteers collected 126 garbage
and recycling bags full of trash, weighing in at 1,660 pounds
or .83 tons. The day was coordinated with the N.C. Fall Litter
Sweep, a statewide effort to reduce roadside trash between Sept.
20 and Oct. 4, and the town of Boones Adopt-A-Street and
Adopt-A-Stream programs.
Per tradition, the town also offered prizes for those who collected
the most unusual pieces of litter. First place and $100 went to
Pi Sigma Epsilon, members of which found a leather flask. Second
place and $50 went to Circle K of ASU, members of which collected
a birds nest built with pieces of plastic grocery bag. Third
place and $25 went to Gardenerettes Garden Club, members of which
found a homemade brandy jar, complete with leftover peaches.
Between both Boone Clean-Up Day and the Fall Litter Sweep, public
works estimates the total amount of collected litter at 2,076
pounds or 1.04 tons. This was an awesome volunteer effort,
and I thank everyone, Boone Adopt-A-Street/Stream program
coordinator Shannon Isaacs said in a press release.
