Lies & Legends
Music of Harry Chapin presented in special stage show Oct. 17-Nov. 2 in Blowing Rock

A talented cast of musician/actors will bring the songs of Harry Chapin to life in the Blowing Rock Stage Company production of Lies and Legends. The musical is presented at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock Oct. 17 through Nov. 2.

Harry Chapin was a storyteller, a socially conscious folk balladeer whose haunting lyrics and soulful tunes celebrated the extraordinary lives of ordinary folk. Through such introspective songs as “Taxi”, “W.O.L.D.”, “Circle”, “Remember When the Music” and his most popular, “Cat’s in the Cradle,” Chapin had a knack for conveying universal themes of alienation, disappointment, unrequited love and yearning with searing clarity via characters ranging from factory workers and taxi drivers to tradesmen and neglectful fathers. Nearly two-dozen of Chapin’s most inherently theatrical narrative pieces have been assembled in Lies & Legends: The Musical Stories of Harry Chapin, a heartfelt tribute to both the man and his music. The Blowing Rock Stage Company recaptures the wistful pathos and tattered-blue-jeans idealism that defined the singer-storyteller with the company’s production of this Off-Broadway hit musical revue Oct. 17-Nov. 2, on stage at the Hayes Performing Arts Center, 152 Jamie Fort Road, in Blowing Rock.

“This show tells the stories of real American people,” says Lies & Legends guest director Avi Hoffman, who serves as the producing artistic director of the New Vista Theatre Company in Boca Raton, Fla. “The strength of Harry Chapin was his ability to understand and empathize with the joys and tribulations of the Average Joe, and put their stories into beautiful musical manifestations.”

The musical’s construct is such that there is no specific Harry Chapin character, explains Hoffman, yet “each song is a musical journey with distinct characters who take us with them on their emotional roller coaster. Within the depictions of all of the characters in all of the musical numbers, we achieve a full and detailed picture of the brilliance of Harry Chapin - a brilliant songwriter and storyteller.” The BRSC production stars Steve Anthony (Beau Jest), Wendy Hayes (A Dash of Rosemary), Cindy Summers (Always.Patsy Cline), Drew Perkins and Ben Hope.
