Tony Craig will be signing his recently released book General
Stores of North Carolina Saturday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m.
until 3 p.m. at the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis.
Craig is an artist and thinks of himself as a preservationist.
He enjoys traveling the back roads of America capturing nostalgic
places along the way. His latest book, General Stores
of North Carolina, shines the light on places that are
only open in the memories of long-time residents and those stalwarts
of shop keeping that just keep opening their doors each day.
The foreword reads, in part, He seeks to recapture their
memory with every shutter click. Ive never known anyone
with such a passion for his subject matter. Tonys work
conveys the emotion of each personal history so strongly that
it can bring a tear to my eye. At the same time, his photographs
celebrate every twist in the country road. They sing a beautiful
ode to times past. General
Stores of North Carolina is divided up into five sections
celebrating the country store from those standing abandoned
on roadsides to those that have persevered through the years.
When possible, he talked with owners, descendants of owners,
and customers to gather their memories, stories and history.
From his travels and conversations, he found one simple truth:
Sometimes, you can go home again.
