A search warrant executed by the West Jefferson Police Department
at an apartment on East Buck Mountain Road has led to the filing
of several drug-related charges. Police Chief Brian Grogan reported
that officers searched the residence of Mark Anthony Coleman
Jr., 19, at 206 East Buck Mountain Road Apartment 2-B and found
eight individually wrapped bags of marijuana.
Lieutenant Detective Chris Welch said that he asked the magistrate
for a search warrant once the department had probable cause
to investigate Coleman.
Several officers conducted the search on Wednesday, Oct. 15,
and found the bags of marijuana along with scales, pipes and
a pill grinder (but no pills). Coleman was later charged with
two felony charges, Possession with intent to sell and deliver
marijuana and manufacture marijuana, and misdemeanor charges
for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Welch said that although they did not find any marijuana plants
in Coleman's residence, they were able to press the manufacture
charge because Coleman allegedly divided the marijuana into
the eight individual bags for distribution.
Welch said that the arrest "took somebody else off the
street that's selling drugs in our town.
"We'd like to stop that," he continued. "If it
takes it one by one, that's what we'll do."
As of Tuesday afternoon, Coleman was still being held at the
Ashe County Jail in Jefferson under a $26,000 bond.
