ASU School of Music offers fall concerts
Appalachian Flute Ensemble performs Oct. 30

The 18-member Appalachian Flute Ensemble performs Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

The ensemble is directed by Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham.

The program features “Flourishes” by Kathy Farmer, “Rose Cottage” from “A Gaelic Offering” by Catherine McMichael, “Serenade: by Lawrence Ink and compositions by Jonathan Cohen and Catherine McMichael.

New age, jazz musician Bill Douglas performs Nov. 1

The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University presents An Evening with Bill Douglas and Friends Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The performance will feature compositions by Douglas, including “Clarinet Sonata,” “Full Moon,” “Latin Etude No. 8,” “Begin Sweet World” and the premiere performance of “Piano Sonata.”

He also will present a workshop for improvisational jazz and classical musicians Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon and 2-4 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center room 119. The workshop is free.

Douglas is a bassoonist, pianist and composer who has toured and recorded for 30 years with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. As a bassoonist, Douglas has played with the Toronto and New Haven symphonies.

As a jazz pianist, he has toured and recorded with vibraphonist Gary Burton and bassist Eddie Gomez.

In 1994, he received SOCAN’s Classical Composer of the Year Award. SOCAN is the Canadian equivalent of ASCAP and BMI. His compositions have been performed by major orchestras and chamber groups around the world.

He has taught music at Naropa University in Boulder, Colo., for 31 years.

Performing with Douglas are Hayes School of Faculty members Douglas Miller, clarinet; Jon Beebe, bassoon; Harold McKinney, trombone; Robert Falvo, percussion; and music students Kelly Frost, Mary Propst and Wess Pasour, bassoons; and vocalist Christopher Winsor, a local musician and one of Douglas’s former students.

Blazing Bassoons perform Nov. 9

The 10-member musical ensemble Blazing Bassoons from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will perform Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The ensemble will perform “Presto” by Bach, “Suite of Early American Tunes” by Christopher Weait, “Turkish March” by Julius Weissenborn, “Baby Elephant Walk” by Henry Mancini, “Blue Set No. 2” by Peter Schickele, “Divertissements” by Philip Catelinet and “The Liberty Bell” by John Philip Sousa.
