In the Oct. 23, 2008, issue of Ashe Mountain Times, we featured
a story on our front page about the honor of
 |
supplying the White House Christmas Tree that has been bestowed
upon the River Ridge Tree Farms in the Creston community.
The farm was given the honor after they won the national honor
for a True Fir at the 2008 National Christmas Tree contest in
Des Moines, Iowa. The award marks the second straight year that
Ashe County has supplied the tree that will stand in the Blue
Room of the White House - far more than any other county in
North Carolina.
In the article, however, I failed to mention that River Ridge
Tree Farms is co-owned by Michelle Davis and Rusty and Ann Estes,
who have spent several years with the business. Only co-owner
Jessie Davis was mentioned in the story, but the credit is not
due all to him.
In fact, the farm also has 12 full-time employees and 40 seasonal
employees who help bring the joy of fresh, healthy Christmas
trees to homes across the United States. The farm currently
has over one million trees planted, and it takes the year-round
efforts of everyone at the farm to make such a giant achievement
possible.
In just a few short weeks, members of the White House will return
to Ashe County to cut down the 21-and-a-half foot tree and transport
it to Washington, D.C. That will also be a monumental day for
everyone at River Ridge Christmas Tree.
I would like to personally congratulate everyone at River Ridge
Tree Farms for their honor of providing the White House Christmas
Tree. It is an honor for the county and state, as well, and
we hope to see more trees from Ashe County and River Ridge making
their way to Washington in years to come.
