Earliest snow day ever?

Q: When schools closed yesterday due to snow, I wondered if that set any kind of record for earliest closing on account of snow. Any idea?
— P.R., Boone

A. We asked Watauga County schools public information director Marshall Ashcraft this questions.
His response: “Our logs of closings, delays, early dismissals, and the reasons for these schedule changes go back to 1994-95. During that span, we had no closings, delays, or early dismissals due to snow earlier than Nov.3. On Nov. 3, 1999, we had a 2-hour delay with limited bus routes. One interesting note — and a hopeful one to this office — is that after that Nov. 3 delay, we did not miss a day due to snow in the 1999-2000 school year until Jan. 5.

Official records aside, two of our Watauga County natives in the central office — each of whom have some 30 years experience in the school system — could not recall missing a day due to snow this early. Of course we have had closings and early dismissals due to heat much earlier in the year, and that is also true of closings and delays for flooding.”
