Classical
guitarist Valerie Hartzell will present a free recital Nov.
10 at Appalachian State University. Her performance begins at
8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Centers Recital Hall. It is sponsored
by the Hayes School of Music.
Hartzell will perform Heitor Villa-Lobos Prelude
No. 4 and 1, Francisco Tarregas Recuerdos de la
Alhambra, John Anthony Lennons Anothers
Fandango, Manuel Ponces Sonata III and
works by Agustín Barrios Mangoré and Roland Dyens
Hartzell is the creator and director of the Classical
Minds Guitar Festival and Competition at Moores School
of Music at the University of Houston and is the director of
the Greater Houston Guitar Guild.
Hartzell began her classical guitar studies at age 3. At age
6, she studied with Alexandre Lagoya at the Académie
Internationale dEté in Nice, France. Hartzell completed
her undergraduate studies in classical guitar at the Peabody
Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and a masters
degree in music at Radford University.
She made her international debut in San Mamete, Italy, at the
Festival del Piccolo Mondo in 1994. Hartzell has performed solo
performances and at music festivals in Europe, Canada and the
United States. She has been a prize winner at the Portland Guitar
Competition, the East Carolina University Competition and Festival,
and the Appalachian Guitar Festival and Competition. She has
won first prizes at the 10th International Guitar Competition
Simone Salmaso in Viareggio, Italy, and at the Concours
de Guitare Classique Heitor Villa-Lobos in Nice, France.
She is a professional teacher at Moores School of Music at the
University of Houston and an adjunct faculty member at Houston
Community College.
