When
most people think of Andy Warhol, the first thing that comes
to mind is an image of a Campbells soup can.
These works became his most enduring images and
a symbol of the Pop Art movement in America.
The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA)
new exhibition features recent Warhol works gifted to the centers
permanent collection through the Andy Warhol Foundation for
the Visual Arts recent placement of works in museums around
the country. Created to celebrate the foundations 20th
anniversary, the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program expands
access to these lesser-known works by one of the 20th centurys
most important artist.
The pieces exhibited will be Polaroid and black
& white photographic works. The exhibition is designed as
a fun way to learn more about the life and work of this artist.
The public Fall Exhibition Celebration on Nov.
7, from 7 to 9 p.m. is part of the Boone Downtown Art Crawl.
Live music from Vertigo Jazz Project will fill the West Wing,
and the East Wing will resound with 70s music in celebration
of Warhols heyday as part of arts social apex.
Seventies-style dress is not required but
would be an excellent way to experience the night, and it can
be commemorated by a trip to the photo booth, a TCVA spokesperson
said. The center invites the community to join in this
evening of great art, music, food, and fun!
During its member preview on Nov. 6, the public
Fall Exhibition Celebration on Nov. 7, and throughout the exhibitions
closing on Feb. 7, 2009, the Turchin Center invites guests to
bring canned goods to provide much needed support for local
families over the coming winter months. The food will be taken
regularly to the Hunger and Health Coalition to help stock its
pantry. The mission of the Hunger and Health Coalition is to
relieve poverty and hunger in a compassionate manner for families
and individuals who are experiencing economic hardship and food
shortages.
The Turchin Center is located at 423 West King
St. in Boone. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. on Friday. The center
is closed Sunday and Monday and observes all university holidays.
There is no admission charge, although donations are gratefully
accepted.
