Optimist Club recognizes outstanding ACHS Seniors

The West Jefferson/Central Ashe Optimist Club hosted over 20 outstanding young people from Ashe County

High School during their regular monthly meeting at Smoky Mountain Barbecue on Thursday, Nov. 6. The November meeting is always set aside for recognizing young people during the Optimist "Youth Appreciation Week."

Lt. Governor Gene Swift, presiding over the meeting in the absensce of President Gwyn Campbell, talked about the many excellent activities that these young people were involved with in the high school, as peer helpers at elementary schools, volunteers in hospitals and nursing facilities, their involvement and leadership roles in their churches, and the main objective was being just good young adults in their community.

Students that were recognized included Kyle Guyton, Shelly Barker, Kim McNeil, Kendra Yearick, Meaghan Howell, Christina Cole, Courtney Camp, Sara Bumgarner, Nathan Seatz, Aaron Scott, Brooke Freeman, Ivey Tant, Jessica Koontz, Kansas Clarke, Tavin Holman, Daniel Waln, Tatum Lemly, Tommy Spagnola, Aaron Scott, Andy Wright, Will Forbis, Justin Reavis and Savannah Sheets.

"Thanks for all the good that you do for Ashe County," said Swift. Youth Appreciation Week is just one of the many projects that the Central Ashe Optimist Club do during the year. They participate in a book give-away to the less fortunate young people at Christmas, help support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library book program, sponsor essay and oritorical contest, Jr. World Golf competition, raise money through a golf tournament to help families of childhood cancer patients, sponsor "Respect for Law Week," sponsor Tri-Star Sports Basketball competition for boys and girls, a roadside clean up, a blood drive for American Red Cross, support North Carolina Boys and Girls Home of NC and the Optimist International Foundation.

The Central Ashe Optimist Club meets the first Thursday of each month at Smoky Mountain Barbecue at 6:30 p.m.
