The Third Annual Veteran Celebration hosted by the Ashe County
High School Chorus was held on Monday,
 |
Nov. 10 at the high school gymnasium. It was a very meaningful
program for the students, faculty, staff and most of all the
veterans and those currently serving the country.
Ashley Honeycutt, a student at Ashe County High School told
the Veterans, "I see you as strong." Caroline Miller,
also a student at Ashe County High School read a poem entitled
"Wounded Soldier" and said "Thank you veterans,
for what you've done." Courtney Campbell, a student and
member of the band, also gave a speech. She compared her band
uniform to the uniforms of the Veterans, saying, "the uniforms
represent a family. You chose to risk your life and you taught
us a lesson. We get rewards for our efforts." Ashe County
High School Chorus Director, Andrea Spears read an essay that
student, John Wooten wrote, titled "Earn This," in
which he talked about the line "Earn This" from the
movie Saving Private Ryan. Student Amber Rash also read an essay
at the celebration, paying tribute to past, future and present
veterans.
Along with presentations from student speakers and the JROTC,
the Ashe County High School Chorus and Band performed. The Chorus
sang several songs including an American Celebration and America
the Beautiful. Ashe County High School Band played Battle Hymn
Republic and the National Anthem, among others. A member of
the chorus led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiange.
All names of local veterans and current servicemen serving the
country were called and at the end, receiving a standing ovatation.
A Twenty-One Gun Salute concluded the celebration.
"I am so excited that so many veterans and servicemen showed
up. It is a blessing to know that so many responded and I am
just honored," said Spears.
