Nutritionist speaks at New Life Fellowship

Nutritionist Mary Bernt gave health lectures at the New Life Fellowship Seventh-day Adventist Church this past weekend.

One topic she discussed was obesity in children, which she said is becoming an epidemic in this country. Just last week, the University of Colorado-Denver released its study on 70 children, 10 to 16 years old, and almost all had cholesterol in their neck arteries, as confirmed by ultrasound. Unfortunately, their answer was to give the children anti-cholesterol drugs. “What about the American diet?” asked Bernt, who is also owner of Veggies Health Food Store in Oklahoma and author of several vegan cook books. “Can’t people see the relationship of fast foods and junk to their health?”

“It is time for America to wake up,” she continued. “The original diet in Eden was vegan – nuts, grains and fruit. Yes, after the flood, meat was allowed, but only certain animals, not the seafood and pork we consume today,” she said. “Ironically, the human lifespan dropped when meat was added to the diet. People pipe up and say, ‘but Jesus ate meat!’ We have to realize that was 2,000 years ago – no factories, no pollution, very little disease affected those animals. That’s not the same today. Chemicals and filth in the water affect the creatures of the rivers and oceans. Parasites and disease, chemicals and hormones in animal feed affect the rest.”

Bernt said fresh fruit is the best defense to fight disease and cancer, since fruit and vegetables have antioxidants that literally eat up free radicals that cause cell damage and disease.

“The bottom line,” Bernt said, “is God wants you to be in good health and be happy. The Holy Spirit can only work with you through your mind. If your body is diseased, then you can’t even think clearly.”

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has been a proponent of vegetarianism for more than 150 years, with health institutes and lifestyle centers all over the world, including the high-ranking Florida Health Care System. The church also operates the Park Ridge Hospital just below Asheville on I-26. Seventh-day Adventists are also used to conduct trial groups on health, with one study on going at this time.

“On a whole, Seventh-day Adventists live six years longer and have less cancer than your regular population,” Bernt said.
