Group raises Voices to help protect woodlandsevent

Sometimes it takes a little paper to save a few trees.

The Boone-based environmental organization Appalachian Voices has released the second edition of “Managing Your Woodlands: A Guide for Southern Appalachian Landowners.”

The free guidebook serves as a manual for private-forest landowners who would like to learn about alternative methods for managing and maintaining a healthy forest. The handbook also includes a new companion DVD, “Landowner’s Guide to Sustainable Forestry: Maximizing Profits While Protecting Water Quality,” a new documentary film from the Model Forest Policy Program.

The second edition of the handbook shares information on forest-management plans, working with foresters and loggers, management options and techniques, forest ecology, forest health problems, economic considerations, and financial incentive programs for good management.

Amanda Lewis, Appalachian Voices spokesperson, said more resources had been added in the new edition. The first came out in 2004, and Lewis said the community lists had been expanded, and non-timber forest products like ginseng are covered as well. The edition also recounts success stories resulting from techniques used in the first edition.

The resource section of the handbook connects landowners with organizations and information to assist in making a reliable investment in forestland.

The companion DVD presents real-life examples of sustainable forestry and protection of water quality, featuring foresters and landowners from around the country, but particularly Missouri, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Appalachian Voices officials state the groups mission is to brings people together to solve the environmental problems having the greatest impact on the central and southern Appalachian Mountains.

Its stated mission is to empower people to defend our region’s rich natural and cultural heritage by providing them with tools and strategies for successful grassroots campaigns.
