Due to a shortage of donations and an immediate need at food
banks, Grandfather Mountain is adding an extra way for those
who work and reside in the High Country to take advantage of
Dollar Days.
This December. instead of paying $1 in cash for admission to
Grandfather Mountain with proof of local employment or residency,
those visiting the mountain can choose to donate one to two
cans of food per person for Grandfathers December Food
Drive.
All donations will be distributed to High Country food pantries.
We saw this Decembers Dollar Days as a great chance
to give to local food banks that are especially in need of donations
this year, said Grandfather Mountain president Crae Morton.
I encourage High Country locals to bring can goods to
cover their admission into the park.
The regular method of Dollar Days will be the same. All those
who work and reside in the six High Country counties, along
with guests traveling in the same vehicle, are invited to visit
for $1 or by donating one to two cans of food during the month
of December.
The six counties making up the N.C. High Country Host regional
travel promotion organization are Mitchell, Avery, Watauga,
Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes.
The discount is also extended to students of colleges and universities
in the High Country and those traveling in the same vehicle.
Please present a drivers license, college ID or local
utility bill as proof of High Country residency. An employee
identification badge or pay stub can be used to show employment
at a High Country business.
The $1 admission price and the canned food donation also extends
to the trails. Those who wish to receive the Dollar Days offer
by donating can goods must make the transaction at the Grandfather
Mountain entrance gate. Permit outlets will only honor the $1
admission.
The mountain is open every day in December except Christmas
Day, weather permitting. The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to
5 p.m., with ticket sales ending at 4 p.m. For current conditions,
phone the entrance gate at 828-733-4337.
