Happy Valley Colonial landmark celebrates
the holidays Dec. 6 & 7

Fort Defiance

|
Are you tired of all the hustle and bustle of todays
Christmas rush? Want to enjoy a much quieter and relaxed atmosphere
for your holidays? Then join Fort Defiance as they celebrate
an old-fashioned Christmas this weekend Dec. 6th and 7th from
1 to 5 p.m.
Fort Defiance will take a step back in time to re-live an
18th century style Christmas at the restored 1792 home of General
William Lenoir. The house will be decorated in the tradition
of Colonial Williamsburg with native greenery and fruit. Wassail
and refreshments will be served and holiday music provided.
Costumed tour guides will take you through the decorated house
and explain how Christmas was celebrated by the Lenoir family
in the 18th and 19th century. The traditional Burning
of the Holly, a tradition that began more than 15 years
ago and symbolic of burning away the years transgression and
starting anew, will take place on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Becky Phillips, the Forts director, explains that Fort
Defiance is featured in this months issue of Our State
magazine. Its quite and honor to have such a prominent
photo spread in this magazine, with all the different historic
sites in North Carolina and they chose us. Were very proud
of this site and feel fortunate that it is right here in our
own backyard. Folks really enjoy the all natural decorations,
most of which are collected right on the grounds of the fort.
It takes more than a week to decorate the house for the season
and the decorations will remain throughout the month of December.
A boxwood wreath making workshop will also take place at Fort
Defiance on Dec. 13th from 10 2. Cost of the workshop
will be $50 each and will include lunch and all materials for
your take home wreath. Space is limited to 10 participants.
If interested please call 828-244-9318 to make a reservations.
Deadline for register for the workshop is Dec. 10th.
Fort Defiance is located in Happy Valley on Hwy. 268, just
5.5 miles off Hwy. 321 from Lenoir and just 23 miles from the
Hwy. 421 underpass in Wilkes County. Admission is $8 for adults
and $5 for children and includes a tour of the house and refreshments.
