Three Non-Profit Groups to Benefit from Local Shoppers

Area shoppers will have the opportunity to buy delicious foods for their family with proceeds going to help their neighbors in need.

Schwans, the nationally known food service company, will be providing Shop From The Truck Day on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Mountain Village Shopping Center in Jefferson from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Customers can purchase their favorite Schwans meals and holiday offers from a large variety of great tasting products, according to local Schwans representative, Mike Kolb.

Proceeds will be divided among Ashe Pregnancy Care Center, Ashe Prison Ministries and Ashe County Outreach. Anyone who buys from the Schwans truck will also receive a raffle ticket, giving them a chance at prizes donated by the different stores in the shopping center.

"I am just so proud to be a part of such a wonderful community that is so caring and giving," said Kolb. "I've been taking up food that my customers have purchased and wanted to donate to help out different families in need."

Kolb went on to say that a local farmer had donated 700 pounds of potatoes to give to local families that have lost their jobs at Catawissa Lumber.

"Schwans' Home Delivery, a quality gourmet food company, has been in business 50 plus years and is dedicated to the well being of their customers and employees. We are pleased to be a part of this community service," explained Kolb.

Free hot coffee, hot cider and cookies will be served inside Living Waters Christian Bookstore during the event.

Matthew and Janette Calhoun Danielson, owners and operators of the store, invite the public to bring gifts in and have them wrapped and decorated with hand made bows every Saturday until Christmas. Monies from the gift wrapping will also be given to the non-profit groups.

Danielson mentioned the benefit and its purpose saying "It is a great way for the community to come together to help those less fortunate that need food. We are not judging anyone, we just want them to know that there is someone thinking about them. We are people working together to help people."

According to the Danielsons, a similar fund raiser was held last year to help raise money for a heart transplant patient. This year they decided to donate to the non-profit groups, including Ashe Prison Ministries. "We have worked closely with Ashe Prison Ministries in the past. Seventy-five percent of the people in jail and prison have kids, and we want to restore relationships at a local level, so that maybe when they are released they won't go back. We want to let them know there are ways to live and have a good time without using drugs," said Janette. "That is one reason we decided to expand it this year, and we are even hoping to do this again next year. It's like a jigsaw puzzle, you give a little at a time and it all adds up."

Anyone that would like to make donations can do so by dropping them off at the Living Waters Christian Bookstore, Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. or on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations can also be mailed to PO Box 892, Jefferson, NC 28640. The store is located at 769 E. Main Street in Jefferson. For more information on the store, call (336) 846-9090.
