More than 1,000 students will receive their degrees during
commencement Dec. 21 at Appalachian State University.
Walter H. Dalton, lieutenant governor-elect for North Carolina,
will be the guest speaker.
Students receiving degrees from the Reich College of Education,
the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University College,
Appalachians newest degree-granting college, will begin
at 10 a.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center on campus. Students
receiving a degree from the Walker College of Business, the
College of Fine and Applied Arts and the Hayes School of Music
will participate in a 2 p.m. ceremony, also in the Holmes Convocation
Center.
A native of Rutherford County, Dalton earned his undergraduate
and law degrees from UNC Chapel Hill. He has practiced law in
his home county since 1977 and is currently a partner in the
law firm Dalton and Miller. . He was elected to the North Carolina
Senate in 1996. In his second term in office, Dalton was appointed
co-chair of the Education Committee and played a crucial role
in improving the states schools and promoting education
policies. In 2002, he was named co-chair of the N.C. Senate
Appropriations Committee. Dalton also has been a board member
of the Rural Economic Development Center, the North Carolina
Economic Development Board and the North Carolina Tourism Board.
A total of 192 graduate students and 899 undergraduate students
have applied for fall graduation.
The College of Arts and Sciences has the largest class of
undergraduates with 303 students. The College of Fine and Applied
Arts will graduate 266 students, the Walker College of Business
will graduate 176 students, and the Reich College of Education
will graduate 118 students.The Hayes School of Music will graduate
29 students, and University College will graduate seven students.
