Mayland Community College is hosting an art exhibit with photography
by Jeffrey Hollis and art created by members of the Yancey Residential
Services.
The Shortbus Studio, part of the Yancey Residential Services
that serves adults with special needs, is housed inside the
Rutherford Hughes Center on Main Street in Burnsville. The service
operates two group homes, which serves clients from Yancey,
Mitchell, Avery, and Madison Counties.
Members of the Shortbus Studio create art pieces for sale at
the studio and also while on display at Mayland. All proceeds
directly benefit the clients and are used to help fund services
for personal care, meals, transportation, community outings,
and recreational opportunities.
Hollis, who photographed members of the Shortbus Studio as they
worked, was a student at Mayland Community College. He now spends
his time looking at the world through his camera lens.
The current exhibit of Holliss work captures the personalities
of the Shortbus passengers. The sensitive quality
of light plays a very powerful component in the featured photographs.
A reception for the artists will be held at Mayland Community
College on December 18 beginning at 1 p.m. The community is
invited to the reception and to view the artwork on display
in Gwaltney Hall on the Main Campus. For more information call
1-800-4-MAYLAND.
