Master gardener sign-up now blooming

The Watauga County Cooperative Extension Service is now taking applications for the 2009 Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program.

The Master Gardener Program is designed for anyone interested in horticulture topics, from the beginner to the expert.

The training involves 12 weeks of instruction, to be followed by a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer service by program trainees.

The program series will be held on Tuesday mornings at the Agricultural Conference Center in Boone beginning on March 3 and ending May 22.

Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost of the class is $85 and includes an instruction manual.

Home gardening and landscape topics are emphasized, including plant propagation, soils and fertility, insect and disease pests and sustainable controls, and many others areas.

Applications can be picked up at the Watauga Extension Center, located at 971 West King St. in Boone, or print an application from the Web site,watauga.ces.ncsu.edu.
