Rainfall eases drought conditions

While rainfall has been rarely heavy, the persistent precipitation of the last month has been enough to ease drought conditions.

Watauga County is currently rated as suffering “Moderate drought” by the N.C. Drought Management Council. Watauga is one of nine western North Carolina counties in the category, though 11 others are in “Extreme drought” and three are in “Severe drought.”

Under the classification, Watauga County water users are advised to minimize non-essential water uses and continue public-awareness and educational efforts. With about two inches of rain falling this month, local water levels are recharging, with measurable precipitation recorded on seven days in December. Last month, about an inch and a half of precipitation was recorded.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center predicts continued drought relief through March in the region.
