Packin’ it up

Gail Hampton and Mary Timothy, recently retired ASU employees, are choosing backpacks which they will fill with school supplies and some gifts and toys. They were among volunteers with the ASU’s Staff Council who took part in a Children’s Shopping Day program on Dec. 11. The council had volunteers take some 88 financially disadvantaged schoolchildren on a shopping spree, with an emphasis on winter clothing. The council raised some $15,840 for the program. It also provided each child with a new school backpack filled with school supplies. Photo by university photographer Marie Freeman

The event was sponsored by ASU’s Staff Council and involved taking 88 financially disadvantaged schoolchildren shopping, with an emphasis on buying winter clothing. Approximately $15,840 was raised for the children, with 100 percent spent on the youth. The day began at the Broyhill Inn where the volunteers gathered, as well as the children for a breakfast and later a lunch. Photo by university photographer Marie Freeman.

Shop Til' you Drop

Kathy Whittington picks out extra toys and candy for her assigned child’s backpack. She was one of many volunteers who took part in ASU’s Children’s Shopping Day program on Dec. 11. The event was sponsored by ASU’s Staff Council and involved taking 88 financially disadvantaged schoolchildren shopping, with an emphasis on buying winter clothing. Approximately $15,840 was raised for the children, with 100 percent spent on the youth. In addition, the council provided each student with a new backpack filled with school supplies. Toys and candy for the youngsters were obtained by Tony Grant, an ASU Staff Council member, from Samaritan’s Purse in Boone. The items were meant for gift shoe boxes, but did not meet packing guidelines. Photo by university photographer Marie Freeman.
