Blowing Rock Stage Co. offers winter classes
TOPs Program begins in February

By Jeff Eason

Kids who are interested in the theater arts can get rid of those winter blahs by taking one of the Blowing Rock Stage Company’s youth classes this winter. The BRSC’s Theater Education and Outreach Program (TOPs) has classes in a variety of subjects for kids ages 5-18 beginning February 2. Additionally, the educational program will feature an ongoing class in adult acting for ages 20 and up.

“Imagination Station” is an ongoing educational program for kids ages 5-7. From February 2 through March 23, Imagination Station will meet on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m. to study the stories and artwork of Eric Carle. With a focus on improvisation, creative play and visual arts, the class is described as “a journey to unlock the most active imaginations using movement, art and favorite Eric Carle tales.”

On Mondays between 6 and 7 p.m. the TOPs Tap classes meet at the Hayes Center in Blowing Rock. Designed at two levels for kids 8-12 and 12-19, the class is a classic tap dancing class using songs from the American musical theatre genre.

On Tuesdays from 3:45 through 5 p.m., February 3-March 24, TOPs presents Fairy Tale Theatre class for ages 8-10. These classes use the classic fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson as kids create props, sets and costumes to stage their own productions of the stories.

Kids ages 11-18 are encouraged to nurture and develop their budding acting skills with the Intermediate acting class. The class meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and is ongoing. Designed for young actors with prior stage experience, the classes focus on writing original material, scene studies, monologues and character development.

Adult acting classes meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and utilize scene studies to explore character choices dictated by the text. No experience is required.

The Teen Actors Guild (TAG) Conservatory meets on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and is designed for those young actors (13-18) who have had substantial stage experience and are seriously focused on the theatre arts. This is a performance-based group and admission is by audition only.

Beginning Acting classes are available on Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for kids ages 11-18. Little or no experience required for these classes that focus on staging and teamwork skills.

TOPs classes are held at the Mariam and Robert Hayes Center for the Performing Arts in Blowing Rock. The cost is $85 per eight-week session. Prior TOPs students, adult couples and siblings receive a 10% discount. Tuition waivers are also available for those who qualify.
