Only a few hours into the new year, the 2009 Ashe County New
Year's Baby was born. Unlike the past few

New Year's Babies, which were all born after Jan. 1, the 2009
baby was born before the 2009 sun had risen.
Weighing six pounds and measuring 19-and-a-half inches, Brihanna
Tylynn Winkler was delivered by Dr. Melinda Wonsick at Ashe
Memorial Hospital in Jefferson and born at 3:34 a.m. And while
Winkler was right on time for the 2009 New Year's recognition,
mother Jessie Winkler of Todd confirmed that her daughter was
ahead of schedule.
"Her original due date was the 23rd [of January],"
said Winkler. She noted that it caught her off guard, but she
wasn't worried.
"My water broke a little after one o'clock," she said,
adding that she was still watching annual New Year's Eve programming
at the time.
Matthew Tyler Alexander, the baby's father, said he was also
surprised when he heard that Jessie had gone into labor.
Both parents agreed that it was the best possible way to start
the new year.
"Out of all the things from the past year to this one,
I would say that it's already been a better year than the last,"
said Alexander. "It made our New Year's even better."
"It's awesome," said Jessie Winkler. "It's the
biggest miracle we have."
